Hey guys, I just wanted to share a quick video with you that I put together showing my grandpas old Gillette safety razor. My dad gave it to me 10+ years ago and I just recently came across it again while going through some old stuff. Cheers
Hello, it's always good to see an heirloom razor being used. I'm happy for you. Congratulations. A lot of guys/gals wish they had a family heirloom razor. Usually the old razors of family members get tossed over the years. I'm sure you will always enjoy the nostalgia of using it, having known its previous owner. Good on you Sir! Enjoy! ps- Welcome to the Shave Den! Have a great day!
Congrats on the heirloom and welcome to the Den. You should head over to the Welcome Center thread and introduce yourself. Plus there is info on the Newbie Giveaway
High their, @Romeomikehotel. The vintage family razors are the best. Glad you have joined us. Introduce yourself on Welcome page: http://theshaveden.com/forums/forums/welcome-center.28/
On the underside there should be a Letter and a Number. They will let you know the Year and Quarter of its manufacture. That looks to be early 50s. http://www.razoremporium.com/gillette-date-codes/
It looks like a late 40's Aristocrat, so it won't have a date code. @mgbbrown could date it specifically in a heartbeat, but I'd have to go hunting to figure out which year.
Welcome @Romeomikehotel! You heirloom razor is definitely a nice one. Looks like my '46-'47 Aristocrat, but I got mine in a trade. They give good shave. Better than the heirloom I have - my dads Schick Krona.
Thanks for the kind words and the info! If this is a late 40s razor then I'd assume it's probably the first one he got when he got back from the war. I'll have to ask my dad if he's got any more good info on it. Do you guys have any more good resources that I can get more info about this razor?
Mr-Razor's site has some basic date information http://www.mr-razor.com/Rasierer/One-Piece solid guard bar/solid guard bar.htm The rest of it is scattered all over the place. Search for Regent Tech and Aristocrat. The Ranger Tech, and later SuperSpeeds, had the same origin as the Aristocrat - with the Senator/Sheraton.
I'm going by the case, and it looks like it doesn't have a cut out for a blade bank as on early Aristocrats. It looks like it's supposed to have a blade dispenser instead and should lay on it's side. Could be a late 40's Aristocrat similar to the one in the pic below, 1948-1950, from @mr-razor's site......... His site..... http://mr-razor.com/index.html
Great heirloom piece. I have acquired a few recently to hand them down to my sons (a great Gillette Diplomat and an Executive). I might just try them one day before I pass them down. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hello, yours seems to be an early 1948 Gillette aristocrat. I concluded this from the notched center bar the knurling on the upper handle, and the way package was written. So, not 1946/47, but 1948. Enjoy!
