Ryan started a fun thread about westerns. What about war movies? Westerns and war movies are two of my favorite genres and I'm always looking to find another great one to watch.

    Some of my favorite include

We Were Soldiers - One of the very few movies that does the book justice. Incredibly powerful.
    Blackhawk Down
    Band of Brothers series
    Full Metal Jacket
The Lost Battalion (Ricky Shroeder is excellent in this)
All Quiet on the Western Front (original and John Boy version)
    Das Boot
Downfall - not really a war movie, per se, but still damn good and certainly war related.
The Deer Hunter - this is the movie that hooked me on the genre.
    Sergeant York
Apocalypse Now - more of an anti-war movie, but still...
    The Great Escape

What are some that you enjoy?

Heroes with Henry Winkler, Sally Field, Harrison Ford. I like war movies that deal with how they return and try to adjust to civilian life. A lot of the time, the Army trains us to kill and be gone but don't know how to train us to become civilians again. I was deployed and was lucky to have a supportive family otherwise who knows what mess I would have gotten in. I didn't have it as bad and I'm grateful, but I will go over again and put myself in harm's way if I have to.

Got a little mad about some of Black Hawk Down. Think they need to tread more carefully about a person actions before they decide to make it commcial instead. Someone expereicned that nightmare.

Das Boot Director's Cut. I'm still pissed that they never subtitled the 10 hour miniseries they made the movie from. The Great War, another BBC series about WWI never released in the U.S. but it was downloadable.:) The World at War, great WWII documentary. Saving Private Ryan, The Hunt for Red October, Crimson Tide, Apocalypse Now, Black Hawk Down, Full Metal Jacket, Schindler's List, Heartbreak Ridge, Stripes, Battle of the Bulge,Battle of Britain, K-19, U-571, Band of Brothers, Lawrence of Arabia, El Cid, Patton, The Bridge on the River Kwai.

    Swamp Fox! Swamp Fox!
    Tail on his hat,
Nobody knows where The Swamp Fox's at.

    Swamp Fox! Swamp Fox!
    Hiding in the glen,
He runs away to fight again.

We got lead, and we got powder.
We don't fight with an empty gun.
Only makes us shout the louder.
    We are men of Marion.
    (Chorus)
Got no blankets, got no bed.
Got no roof above our heads.
Got no shelter when it rains.
All we got is Yankee brains.
    (Chorus)

Got no cornpone, got no honey.
All we got is Continental money.
Won't buy bacon, hominy or grits.
Roasted ears and possum is all we ever git.
    (Chorus)
