They really cleaned up well. The interesting thing was that the one that appeared to be in the worst shape came out the cleanest and shiniest. Before: And after:
Sometimes that is because it may have been used the shortest period of time before being put away so less wear was placed on the razor. I have obtained some that provided the same scenario as you discussed.
The other thought I had was that some of the patina and soap scum may have actually protected the finish from additional wear and/or oxidation.
