Modern shaving wisdom is at once art, science, sorcery and hokum. Some of it is idiosyncratic therefore little better than anecdotal; some is testable, indisputable fact, applicable to anyone. Some is pure bunk. But this thread should be a sticky because it is chock-full o' truth.
I don't think it's the mild razor's low efficiency, it's the user's low proficiency. The newer user hasn't taken the time to learn, so they jump to more aggressive razors, or one's with more open areas of effectiveness. But this opens up more room for error. Once technique is right, any razor sings, especially the mild ones. Someone said earlier, the learning process takes a few months (maybe a year). I agree.
I also think that, in some people, there may be a psychological factor in that, if they can't feel the blade, they assume the razor is ineffectual.
