I enjoyed this shave so much and my barber told me even he couldn't get me any smoother. The Frozen Tundra soap was colder than hell, the Lucky Tiger balm and Krampert's Frostbite splash added lots of extra soothing and chill!

Your Bay Rum scent choices run the spectrum of "very clovy" (Ogallala) to "sweet/smooth" (C.O. Bigelow). I know both products well and find their scent profiles to be widely different. How do you enjoy the combination?

I started out with multiple Bay Rum products and smelled each and tested them in various combinations.

Here's how I picked out this combination:

1. The Ogallala Bay Rum Soap lathers well and the scent seems a bit more mellow than the aftershave. Also, the Ogallala aftershave burns like a chemical burn. So, it was disqualified. Also, the aftershave is WAY WAY more 'clovey' than the soap. Perhaps the ingredients of the soap are imparting a bit of their own effect on the scent? I think that's what's going on. I tried a bunch of other Bay Rum shave soaps and all of them had a kind of 'odd' tart-like tangy hint in the scent. Something the soap ingredients might have imparted but I just didn't like the core scent of the other soaps or if one smelled ok, it didn't lather well. Ogallala soap smells on point and lathers up a solid, good lather. Then, finally I found that it combined really well with either of the finalist aftershaves Stephens Bay Rum or Gabels.

2. The aftershave finalists were Stephens and Gabels. All the other aftershaves were WAY too clovey and/or burned the bejesus out of my face. Stephens smelled great with still a hint of clove and was gentle. I still own a bottle and will use it by itself this winter at some point. I chose Gabels mostly because it blended with the scent of the Ogallala shave soap and my Bigelow Apothecary cologne perfectly. Also, Gabels had a tad more 'kick' upon application but without any burn.

3. The Bigelow Apothecary No. 32 Bay Rum Cologne. It was recommended from the Basenotes forum. It's more Bay-Leaf centered and adds a black pepper note. It lasts and lasts and can be smelled in the cold winter air. The best thing about this scent is that in the winter, when it's cold, the scent gives my spirit a sense of warmth. It seems to give me the impression I'm radiating warmth. I know that sounds odd, but when it comes to how one feels, emotions and state of mind are powerful. Something about this scent makes me 'feel' warm and so I feel more comfortable in the cold.

I loved the resulting combination of these products. Even the Bay-centered Sam's Natural Deodorant makes a difference. That slight bit of clove in the Ogallala shave soap sticks around in my gotaee beard hair and I get occasional whiffs of it along with my bay-centric cologne and aftershave. I just love the combination.

Sometimes testing various combinations of products you find gold. I love this combo.

I guess I was wrong, it does matter what kinda prep you do before the blade goes to your face. Yesterday, I just did water and Cremo and had to work very hard to get something better that just a DFS. Besides a lot of clean up. Today, with the proper prep, a 2 pass, WTG/ATG with a small amount of clean up made all the difference in the world. The old saying "You learn something new everyday", is pretty much on the mark. I`m blessed this morn. with a BBS.
