The color of the handle may have no effect on use, but the shape will. So in that respect, I think its importance equals that of the knot. The fun colors, though I like them, have no effect on usability. (But they do cheer up a tedious task.)
That’s a good point about handle shapes. If you cannot get a good grip on the brush, then it’s a pain to make and apply the lather.
Since we're talking about colors, how about the colored synthetic knots available these days? They turn me off, looks childish, or girly, or something.
Brushes aren’t something I have ever thought about resale... with razors I assume you can hone and sanitize or clean accordingly to pass on to the next generation. Where as brushes i don’t feel that way. I think they are a sanitary item like a bar of soap. Once it’s used it’s yours kinda thing. Unless you can sanitize them but I have not heard of that as of yet. Also handles are cool but I feel like everyone is wrapped up on what kind of knot you have, does it have back bone, does it splay out, is it stiff, how is it set, is it a bulb or fan etc... honestly I feel like I needed way more knowledge with a brush than I did with razors. Mine are all over the place. Some traditonal, some funky colors, some clear, some wood, one aluminum. Even one zenith with a painted ceramic handle. Which I already managed to chip - ouch. I too never really thought about resale value. Not saying I wouldn't, just hadn't considered it before.
Color-wise, the Fuller red/black semi-transparent handle (nylon bristles) is my favorite look (one in the pic needs polished). Butterscotch is nice too. But size is the greatest concern for me, and that's why the honkin' big Omega boar someone here gifted me years ago is still my only brush.
Have some older brushes that I like their look. Some will become collector items and some won't. I do like some color in my brush handles or a good wood handle, so after buying the more traditional handles, I now look for something a little different.
Different has jumped into a big lead in this survey. Not talkin Secretariat 1973 Belmont Stakes yet, but it could happen soon.
