Yes, but really just before, end of WWII, lots of soldiers went the traditional way!
The other popular way was with a manned flying bom, crying bonzai, meaning "little tree". Or was it banzai??

Hari-Kari is the Chinese derived name for the Japanese ritual of seppuku. They are on and the same.

That is what I had originally thought too. When I directed Madama Butterfly, I did some research into the ritual and, while I don't dispute what @Arnout writes, I never came up with that differentiation.

Bama, it had been a long time, and language is dynamic.
We stopped wishing each other a "jolly gay day", the chance you refer to your ceo as senile in an official doccument is rather small,..

Most japanse historians tend to believe there is a difference. As harakiri is a vulgar name, the samurai used the word seppuku, and in official writings seppuku was used.
Japan had a real dufficulty with its own cultur during industrialisation, all connections with the feudal past were cut and vulgarised.

I dont know How old the word harakiri is, but i doubt it would be from chinese origin?

    Found on Quora, concise derivation:

Harakiri (腹切り) comes from Hara (腹) which means Stomach. Hara is the "Kun" reading of the Chinese kanji 腹

Kiri (切り) is the infinitive form of the verb Kiru (切) which means "to cut." Kiru is the "Kun" reading of the Chinese kanji 切

Seppuku is simply the more formal term.

Well, i think we are speaking a different language, having a different discussion, whatever.

All japanese writing originates from chinese kanji. But these were introduces 1000 AD or earlier.
The whole honorable suicide idea develloped in a competely different culture, somewhat 1500, 2000 years later.
At that time japan was a closed, isolated island. there were some contacts with koreans but little or non with china.

The thing about japanese history: it is published in japanese rather than english.

Think about the meaning of a formal term vs the spoken language in a formal society and you will think of the consequences.

And off course if hollywood idiolated harakiri that is what we will use,...

About the zombie desease, it is caused by an airborne virus that enters the body through small wounds on the skin. Better stop shaving now
