Has anyone tried or heard of adding alum to aftershave? Would it help or hurt to add it? I am just curious, I was thinking it might be a good additive.

There is a member here who dissolves alum in a spray bottle. If I remembered how to spell his name I'd tag him here. I don't know about using it as an aftershave, in my opinion, it's to drying. In w it as a post shave and then wash it off.

yeah i use it sometimes at post shave usually when i get in a hurry. i was just thinking a small amount dissolved in my aftershave might be benificial but you might be right about the drying effect, maybe put some in a balm.

Put a drying agent into a moisturizing agent? A little counter productive? Just sayin'.

Some the HTGAM aftershaves have alum as an ingredient. I haven't tried them, but they get good reviews.

I use HTGAM The Beach AS quite a bit. It has alum in it and I really enjoy the results on my skin. I tend to have oily skin which maybe part of the reason it works for me.

What about Witch Hazel? Alum and Witch Hazel are both astringents.

That's me! I dissolve a block of alum into about 20 oz. of water and use 3-4 squirts. I do wash it off afterward.

No problem. I recently did a couple searches for DIY shave products and came across that. I'm on a college student budget, so I would totally do it and make pre-shave oil if Essential Oils weren't so damn expensive.

Can you tell me how to add it? I would love to.

I dissolved a small alum block in Dickinson's several months ago and am using it almost every shave with excellent results.
