I'm going to try out my "new" Atra razor for the next week. I haven't shaved with any cartridge razor in about 4 years. This one dates back to the year my second son was born. Here is Tuesday's line up. It is an X4 from 1977. The cuttiing edge is supplied by Dorco.

I have the CTII carts and predict you'll be moderately impressed.

    Tuesday's Shave, Day 1

The TABAC Shaving Cream face-lathered well with my Jayaruh #62 Synthetic brush. I was pleasantly surprised at the shave today. Two passes and touch ups with the Gillette Atra with a Dorco Comfort Thin II blade gave me a close, comfortable shave. I like that the cartridge is designed to give lots of flow through. It was very easily rinsed between passes with no clogging. After a cold water rinse and alum block, I finished off with T.N. Dickinson's WH and then Aqua Velva Ice Blue After Shave. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed...

I had that exact razor. I kind of liked it. :)

I think it was an improvement over the Trac II. The Sensor was good, but I am not sure it was a real improvement on the Atra.

The handles are commanding some real money on Ebay...

Yes, more than I am willing to part with. That is why, when I saw this one at a flea market for just a dollar, I did not hesitate. It is in its final home until I die, then some lucky shaver will get it.

My dad gave me that same handle awhile back. He and I both prefer the Trac II but it's still great.

When I need to shave with a cartridge (e.g. flying with cabin baggage only) I also use a Trac II / GII handle.

I liked the TracII but for some reason the Atra and my face did not get along. I think it had to do with the shave angle caused by the 2 blade pivoting head. I do great with the Mach3 so maybe the Atra head is just too narrow for me.

In the last year I gave a try with an Atra cartridge razor. I was quite impressed with the results. If I did go back to cartridge shaving it would be with an Atra.
