Since I asked for ideas about new Theme Weeks, and since the suggestion came up for a Boar Brush week, I had to include a Badger Brush Week and a Horse Hair Brush Week. This week (9/17-23) we pay homage to the Badger. Now throughout the SOS threads I have seen some beautiful badger brushes. Break 'em out this week and post up a pic!
Just about the right time, Steve! I've got a new Wilkinson Sword badger brush and was planning on giving it a good braking in. I've had three shaves with it last week, but I think another week will help me getting to know it better!
Seems like my Simpsons will be getting good use this week. The Chubby is the only badger left here LOL.
Not what I used, but at least you can see the brush I used for my midnight shave. According to some people, the knot used in this brush is the long discontinued and much mourned Rooney's Finest. A few of these knots still turn up from time to time in their warehouse and they release a very limited run of five to ten brushes every year or so. This knot was made in 1992.
Good day Gents! I think I will use this week to focus on some of my inexpensive, yet very good quality badger brushes from Frank Shaving. This morning I used the 5th one from the left with the fan shape. It is one of my most favorite brushes... and it worked very well lathering Mitchell's Wood Fat. I think I bought the brush for just over $20. From left to right, the brushes are: FS Richmond (28mm) - Silvertip Badger - Ivory color, large knot. FS Warwick (23mm) - Best Badger - Ebony color. FS Chubby (26mm) - Finest Badger - Horn color, large knot. FS Chrome Metal (23mm) - Finest Badger - Chrome. FS Berwick (21mm) - Finest Badger - Ivory color, fan shape. FS Corfe (21mm) - Finest Badger - Ivory color. If you have never seen this "nature" video of the Honey Badger, you might have a very good laugh. Be warned though, the narrator uses a few choice words. Not for young children! Check out this video on YouTube (AKA: Honey Badger Don't Care) The Crazy Nastyass Honey Badger Cheers!
Monday! The Wilkinson Sword badger brush has less backbone than the DVH boar brush, but then this one is nice and soft! Face lather today, mug lather tomorrow (Yeah, the other mug! )
That Franks Chubby looks BEAUTIFUL. I really need to save and order one to see if I can replace my desire for a Simpsons or Semogue 2 band which are quite expensive. Oh BTW All week I'll be using my sole remaining badger - Chubby CH1 in Best
This morning I used the black one: FS Warwick (23mm) - Best Badger - Ebony color. What a great brush. I think the price was around $35.
From what I've read about Franks Shaving brushes, I'm almost ready to kick my own backside for spending $150+ on a Simpsons Best. 5-6 brushes for the price of one...
Today I had the pleasure of using an Omega Pure Badger. Nice brush Here's a picture, and I apologize for the bad quality
Some catching up to do! Monday - Used the Dridecker. Just may be one of the "best bang for your buck" deals out there. Tuesday - Crabtree & Evelyn Pure Badger. Another great deal for me. C&E was having a close out sale at the mall. Picked it up for half price - roughly $18.
Ultimately, I think shaving brushes are a bit like cats, they pick you, you don't pick them. Well, this is the one that picked me. 24mm, Grade A, 46mm loft. Bloom pic, it's still wet after this mornings shave. images
Same brush (Wilkinson Sword badger) but now combined with DVH cream and a Gem OCMM. Nice combination!
Wednesday: Today it was the Savile Row 3824/Ayar's Bowl and Herbs of Bulgaria SC and the Muhle R41 "Fang".I've named some of my more memorable razors ,actually I should start naming some of my brushes too
Here's 26mm Thater 3 band I rehandled. Originally the loft was at 54mm, I dropped it to 45mm. It's a nice dense, soft brush with good backbone for face lathering. IMO, much improved but remember it's just my opinion. temp img uploader
Today's brush was a vintage Ever Ready 250PB. Still has the original knot and performs great. Not a large brush, but still managed to whip up enough vintage Old Spice soap to give me enough lather for four or five passes. Just something about using vintage items. Can't put my finger on what it is, except to say I think it's cool.
Thursday: Shavemac Custom 2 band,d01,fan/DB Brush Scuttle/RazoRock XXX This brush is one of my favorites,a lil scritchy but soft tips, great backbone does a great job of face and head lathering. It also does a great job of bowl lathering TSD shave soaps and Wheat Cream,I like to lather both together when I have both scents on hand.
