Here is another classic GDC continuation thread from other threads in the past. Let's set the stage. In the thread below there were two handles that were ready but only one knot was available. http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/a-tale-of-two-handles-but-only-one-knot-decision-time.40006/ So the vintage Rubberset was selected and the vintage Hegener had to wait for a knot of its own. Time passes and the new Stirling brush, with the fibers used in the L'Occitane Plisson Synthetic brush, hits the market. There was a frenzy of buying until all the factory first units were depleted. Rod over at Stirling decided to sell the "blemished units" at a discount price so I bought two. One for testing as is and the other would be used to free the knot from the handle for later use. That can be seen in the thread below. http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/dissection-of-stirling-synthetic-brush-review.46250/ So now the Stirling knot was made available for the Hegener. At the same time something else was entering into the picture. Chiseled Face Groomatorium released their Fauxmere knot, which uses the same fibers as the Stirling and the L'Occitane Plisson, but it has a larger base than the Stirling knot as shown in the thread below. http://theshaveden.com/forums/threa...shes-factory-seconds.46185/page-3#post-869435 At that point I determined that the best course of action was to match the Fauxmere knot with the #4 Hegener handle because the handle could easily be expanded to accomodate the knot. That will leave the excised Stirling knot for another, perhaps tighter fitting handle. The handle was also filled with copper shot to make allow for a hefty solid feeling rather than the original light weight unfilled hanldle. So without further ado here is the completed Candidate #2 Hegener brush. Thanks for viewing.
Great job Gary. Can't wait to see how it performs. Looks like a brush I would like lathering my ugly mug. Not the one on the shelf... The one in the mirror.
This brush handled well this morning. Lots of backbone with soft tips. As a synthetic brush gets larger in knot base size and greater in density, the length of the effective knot can be decreased if the fibers are thinner. This one at an effective loft of 45 mm would be about the shortest you can go and still get great peformance due to the thin Gen 3 fibers. This brush is a keeper.
