I am pretty sure this has been discussed, but wanted to read The Shave Den's thoughts concerning Bufflehead shave soap. I have never tried Bufflehead nor have any affiliation, but it seems like this is considered the cream of the crop on most wet shaving forums. I know it is sparsely made, sells out in seconds, and a puck can sell for up to $100 on Ebay. Can anyone chime in on the soap performance, what sets it apart from others, and if you would/will purchase again? Thanks!
I've never tried it, but would love to. I think maybe @Skinny Rogers has some or has used some in the past, if my memory serves me right. He might can chime in. Anyway, welcome to TSD, @Micho-Mike!
If I can be honest here, there's no such thing as the mecca shave soap. There's your favorite and my favorite but no Mecca..
This.. Can't praise it OR knock it, but can pretty much promise you that the best thing about it is the cloud of mystery and the limited availability. I am not trying to be a curmudgeon, but this is one of those things that makes grown men look like little kids collecting Pokemon.
Their website prices seem reasonable ($20) but they're out of stock. Maybe the ducks are the problem. I don't know how much tallow a duck can provide.
Haha true, like most of you said there is no mecca; I just find it crazy that people are willing to spend $100 on 4 oz. of shave soap. Not trying to knock on any other soap makers, just wanted to see if anyone has used it and what their take on it is, also start a conversation. I'm guessing duck tallow would be super limited in availability compared to beef.
Ok I'll chime in here. I have a fair amount of experience with the soap. Is it a good soap. Yes. Is it an end all soap. No. Reason I say that is everyone is different. Some will love and others won't. Is it worth $100. That's up to the buyer but to me no way. I'm not one of the guys that likes to profit off this hobby. There are many that do tho. In this hobby hype drives everything. Whether the product is good or bad and believe me some are bad (to me at least). Yet they are highly touted and hyped. Many fall prey to this. I sold off about 10 tubs of Bufflehead this year for less than I bought them for. Not because they were bad. Only because I don't chase the newest best thing in soaps. I know what I like and I use them. To answer the OPs question. Lather is solid and hydrates well. Scents I found very pleasing. Slick and protective. Better than a lot of the hyped artisan stuff out there for sure.
@Skinny Rogers thanks for the answer! I've been waiting for a response to the soap. I have used tallow and vegan soaps, and prefer tallow, but I have seen how people 'prepare' for this soap and it sells out in seconds. Never tried actually ordering it, but was curious if the duck base tallow really makes a difference. Definitely understand about not giving into the hypes, there is waaaaaayyyyy toooooo many. I am still trying out different soaps trying to figure out which I really like best. Again, I appreciate the response, have a good weekend!
I've not tried this soap, and suspect I never will. I'm curious, however: what are your favorite soaps that caused you to unload your Bufflehead?
I still have a tub of Tishomingo bought in 2015 and concur with Lance, it's a good soap but it doesn't raise the shave to 100 dollar heights. Plenty of more easily available soaps out there that are as good or better. I can mention Eufros (especially tallow version), L&L, Barrister and Mann glissant; from my side of the pond I'm very pleased with Phoenix and Beau, Wickham 1912, and recently tried a Spanish artisan called Jabones by Luna. Nuavia wins on scent but not performance - I'm in the minority there. But back to Bufflehead: there's something about unavailability that lures us in as if to sirens, isn't there. The same is discernible with brushes and razors. But I can't discredit Justin, the guy behind Bufflehead, since he is producing on his spare time which obviously limits production.
