I'll measure it for sure. Now I just need to decide on which knot to use. I love the red on it. I don't know however if I'll use a synthetic or a hair.
I'd remove the knot then measure opening. The one I have seams HUGE. I thought a fan shaped quarter moon looks great.
It arrived today! I already got the knot out. Stripping the handle and sanding off the initials on the bottom of the handle. Will send pics shortly.

For a general rule of thumb, 2mm smaller than the opening is generally recommended. However, exceptions to this rule exist. If you are going to set the knot shallower than normal, 1mm smaller is recommended. Deeper than normal, 3-4mm smaller is recommended. Normal depth is about 8-12mm. Shallow is 3-6mm, and deep is 14-16mm. Deeper gives you more backbone, and shallower makes for a floppier knot. Stuff to keep in mind for future projects. In this case, I agree with @TobyC that a 22mm knot will probably work best for this handle.
