Finally finished the coffee table I made over the summer. It has a glass top under which is a compartment filled with various fossils my wife has collected over the years. It is cherry with a polyurethane finish. I was a little uneasy doing it. I have never used glass in a project before. Now that it is done I can spend more time at TSD.
Very nice; is that made of cherry? What do yo you mainly collect ... Brachiopods, Trilobites etc? I see Lunatia snail fossils.
The top, sides and bottom are cherry. The legs we're not so sure. The wood in the legs was sold to me as cherry. We suspect it is not. The grain seems more like mahogany. It also machined differently. Prior to planing it looked like cherry. I had planned on making a razor cabinet with the scraps but there wasn't enough left. She collects anything she thinks is cool. I don't know much about them other than they are pretty cool. She tells me that she has the three you mentioned as well as Nautilus, Bivalves, Sun coral, Crinoids and others. I call them her rocks.
I wasn't sure if either you or your wife were paleontologist, sedimentologist or geologist. Great collection all the same.
Late one night when your good wife is asleep, sneak downstairs, remove the glass and swap those fossils for razors. Pop the glass on and sneak back to bed. Say nothing in the morning!
