    The Long Boring Story

Back in the 80's when I was a wee lad who had just started shaving, the Cold War had reached the point where it was common knowledge that we'd all die in the nuclear exchange of a 37 minute long WWIII. I'd actually had several teachers say that if anyone in the class lived past 30 it would be a miracle.

The amount of bad action movies starring Sylvester Stallone, Chuck Norris, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren was staggering. Even Clint Eastwood got a few shots in. Sometimes they were matched against the Commie, sometimes they were the Commie, but these movies were continuously in the theaters and on cable TV. One thing they seemed to always have in common was that they'd often end with the hero blowing up the bad guy in some over the top explosion while ironically saying, "Dasvidaniya".

When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, these movies went away. The Soviets were gone, they were just Russians now. They weren't scary anymore. They were broke, they were business men, they were people trying to make a place for themselves and their loved ones in this new world. They were people like you, and me.

Or at least that's what they wanted us to think. Everything was fine until a woman calling herself "Tanya" drew first blood by sending me the wrong razor blades. I'm going to assume "Tanya" works for the KGB and this is the first strike in an attempt to undermine the free wetshavers in the US. The joke's on her, because it's my turn to say dasvidaniya.

    The PIF
You get 100 brand new Rapira Swedish Supersteel blades. 100% unused. Still in the package. Fresh from "Tanya's" KGB lair in Mother Russia. I will not be responsible for any nicks or weepers that may be included in this package! It has been swept for bugs and listening devices, however.

    • You must have been at least 15 in 1989 so you can have some recollection of the Red Menace.
    • Like a Soviet ICBM, this is for CONUS only.
    • You must post a pic of/from your favorite 80's action movie. Duplicate movies are okay.
    • If you were in the US military or worked in some kind of Federal intelligence service prior to 1989 speak up and you will get an extra entry

Winners will be selected at the time of my choosing with the method of my choosing.

There were some pretty bad movies. Red Dawn was one. I served in the US Army 1967-70.

This is real in my life as I served with a tactical missile unit in West Germany in the early to late 70's. I have many cold war stories. In lieu of a movie picture, I'll post this....

Oh so many 80's action movies to choose from, but only one logical choice!

‘You just killed a helicopter with a car!’ ...John McClane, "I was out of bullets."

Not a Russian KGB war movie, but hey, close enough. ;)
    Im in. Thanks!

Edit: Die Hard (the entire series). In case you couldn't tell from the pic (really?)!

    NCoxSTL AAACK!

For a moment I thought we had the same nemesis in Moscow, but mine is named Andrey....who mocks wetshaving patriots like myself by offering a free gift with a purchase of Voskhods....makes sure it takes three times the normal time to have them arrive, and the free gift is ONE Rapira Super Stainless blade. Yes, one blade. The evil empire lives!

Having said that, I must say спасибо (spasibo) for such a fine PIF! And I must also respectfully decline entry as I have more Russian blades than most Russians in spite of PIFing them in great numbers. Good luck to all who enter! These really are fine blades, unless of course you didn't order them in the first place.

See? I knew the Ruskies were trying to sneak as many Rapira's into the US under the guise of Voskhods!

I like these blades so I'm in on this one.

    1) While on loan to an amphibious command ship around 1988, we were surprised to learn that the Russians had sold an old diesel sub (Kilo class, iirc) to Libya. No, that wasn't the surprise. The surprise was that this old junker was being towed - TOWED - to its new home and somehow went undetected until the bridge panicked and yelled for the Snoopy Team (that was my shop) to get the heck on deck and ID the sub that was passing by. Sure enough...a powerless Russian sub was being dragged by within dipping distance. We dropped the ball on that one but in our defense, we'd gotten no word that it was heading our way. We got reamed nonetheless.

We had a similar incident with a TU-95 off the coast of Norway. Funny story but still too embarrassing to tell.

    2) I'm CONUS.

    3) You didn't say it had to be U.S./USSR related. I also really like THE SANDBAGGERS. Highly recommended viewing.

    4) That's me.

Not in cos not Conus. But I wanted to share what in my humble opinion is one of the ultimate USA v Russia movies of the 80s

Edit: Just realised the sad truth that some people might be too young to remember this Classic of 80s action films, Top Gun. Back when people thought Tom Cruise was cool, yes such a time did exist, a long long time ago.

Here's what we have so far. I'll continue to add to the list as entries come in.

If you identified yourself as having served before 1989, you got 2 entries.

@Shotwell got 2 entries becuase he picked Remo Williams. Those of you who know my name know that is really close to my actual name. A friend's dad in high school always used to ask me how the adventure was going on. Little known to any of you, I'd predecided to give an extra vote to anyone who named that movie.

Even though I specified an 80's action movie, @R.D.Nelson still gets an entry for 1990's Hunt for Red October. The Red October (USS Blueback) is anchored in the Willamette River, right in the middle of Portland. I see it on my daily commute every day. So, I'll give it to him for playing the Home Team Card.

I gave @Spyder 3 entries since he posted a pic of his installation that he obviously took from a Soviet spy he captured.

    • You must have been at least 15 in 1989 so you can have some recollection of the Red Menace. I should get an extra entry due to my advanced age.
    • Like a Soviet ICBM, this is for CONUS only. I'm located right in the middle of the US. Even the post office can find me with minimal effort, so I should get an extra entry here as well.
    • You must post a pic of/from your favorite 80's action movie. Duplicate movies are okay. I posted the best action movie of the 80s...again deserving of an extra entry.
    • If you were in the US military or worked in some kind of Federal intelligence service prior to 1989 speak up and you will get an extra entry. Sorry, I have no intelligence of any kind, so deduct one of my extra entries.
With that, I'm in with five entries. That is, if you are a true, red-blooded American capitalist. Otherwise, please put me down for one entry which would indicate your dubious intent to rid yourself of stuff you simply hate.

Thanks for your generosity. Another very nice PIF. :D
