    Thanks for the group input on the recent round of Bay Rum advice. However, after using the forum search tool, I thought DIY Bay Rum deserved it's own thread. For those with an alchemical bent, what recipes did you try and how were the results?
    (I thought this was a good leg up: http://www.artofmanliness.com/2010/01/21/diy-bay-rum-aftershave/)

    I note that the fine folks at Krampert's Finest got regulated out of rum and into isopropyl alcohol. They claim that, though it smells different in the bottle, the same aroma develops on the skin. This makes me wonder how much scent the solvent imparts to the end result!

    Experiences to share, anyone?

    Does anyone know what the big difference is between the two kind of bay leaves Pimenta racemosa and Bay Laurel? Do they have different smells?

    That, of course, lets you know immediately I have no clue about the difference in what they smell like. :D

    I don't know the difference but if I remember correctly bay laurel oil is the bay rum one.

    They're completely different plants, and yes, smell completely different.

    Wiki time;
    Pimenta racemosa
    (Bay Rum)

    Bay Laurel

    This is one of those things (make home made Bay Rum AS) I've always wanted to do but does not make it high on the " to do" list. I've also heard of folks using Gin to make AS for a different scent profile.

    Bay rum is poisonous and can't be consumed. It's a fairly common tree /bush /patio plant in Jamaica. I'll have to try and grab one next time I go. Bay laurel is the one that we cook with. They're completely different in scent. Scent wise, laurel had less character (though I use it a lot for cooking!).
