Adam (@Drygulch ) sent me three razors in need of some TLC. One razor, a 'Green Lizard' by the Cattaraugus Cutlery Co, needed a new pivot pin, cleaning and honing. The blade itself had these irregular horizontal striations across both sides of the blade face. The next two needed a bit more work…a W.R. Case 5/8 and another Cattaraugus, this one a little guy; both in need of new scales and some blade help. New scales for two of the razors, general clean-up and polish of the blades. The Green Lizard has a very thin blade so I was hesitant to go to hard after the striations. they appear to run through the metal, which lead me to believe they existed in the blade from day one. Finished shots: WR Case & Son with new scales of purple heart wood. Removed the slight frown on the blade edge. Brass pins and domed washers. Green Lizard: disassembled the scales for a thorough sand, clean & polish ; new pins and washers. You can see the deep striations that run through the blade and into the tang. Little Cattaraugus: This is one small razor Removed the hanging heel on the blade and added some textured 'caveman' scales (of black horn); stainless pins and domed washers. I still have to hone the little guy, but all should ship out this week….
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so excited to get these guys back! They look amazing! I was a little hesitant to tackle these myself, but they ended up in very good hands.
I'm thinking that little Caveman Cat razor would be good for those tight areas around the 'stache and other tough spots. A round tip means no unnecessary nostril or lip jabs….
I have seen a few razors that have been shortened to that size in pictures, but that's the smallest razor I have seen that looks like it came that way from the factory. I thought there was some good steel in it, but I didn't think it would turn out that awesome!
Sweet!!! Love the lizard. I guess you don't have to be a straight user to enjoy the beauty of good craftsmanship. Nicer work Kevin.
Magnificent work Kevin! Wish I had the nerve and/or patience to attempt work like that! Well done. Razors to be proud of Drygultch!
Here's a little comparison on the size of that Little Cat (Cattaraugas)…. Here it is next to MY smallest razor—a little Larkin, (top) measuring in at 2.25" (57mm) in length a a hair under 5/8" (16mm) in width. The Cat (kitten?) is 2.375" (60mm) in length, a hair under 4/8" (12.5mm) Here it is next to a full-sized (large) razor…A Wostenholm 3" (76mm) long; 7/8" (23mm) wide… The diminutive size is almost getting into 'Corn Razor' territory…
