48 hour point. Just became a slick, non-tacky surface. I am going to give it at least 24 hours before I start cutting/shaping.

Haven’t landed on final shape yet for the scales. Normally freehand a template and then just let it take me where it takes me.

Also, there were small holes in the first foil mold so glad I had the second.

Had to give it another day... started to take off the foil and it didn't seem as stable as I hoped towards the bottom. Going to check it again later today. Fingers still crossed. :)

Got the foil mostly off and here is how the underside looked...

I get a taste of how the wood is interacting with the color, but it should really show itself when I sand this entire blank thinner. Probably won’t get to that tonight. :(

That is going to look incredible... let me know if you decide to sell. Anxious to see the finished product.

Just shoot me... where is the fast forward button?!?!?!?!

So it has got to get ugly before I hope to make it pretty. A Friday night spent with sandpaper.

Just curious why not use a bandsaw or dremel for the heavy work?

I actually don’t own a bandsaw or belt sander, and the dremel will make an appearance later. I haven’t figured out a way to use the dremel in a way to keep this blank flat.

I also have a better chance of not breaking it if I do it by hand. But that may be just me. :)

I know the feeling; I use to have all the big toys, but down sized to an apartment and now do everything by hand. :happy088:

I have a lot of work on the backside to go but I wanted to see the possibilities...
I like to add some thin CA glue (super glue) at this point to the wood and let it absorb. I think this gives it a little more strength as I continue to thin it up. Maybe it helps or maybe not - but I think it looks cool!

Working on things with your hand is under rated ... it gives you the appreciation of the final product and plenty of pride. By the way the wood your using looks to be spaulded maple. I made a set of shelves from wormy spaulded maple. It has has great character!

Thank you for this info. I find it has a beautiful pattern but very different densities even in this small piece, which I will need to take into account when sanding into shape.

Thank you both. Hoping to sit down and sand while watching the games. We’ll see where we get.
