The beginning of a Brush. The piece of briar has been sitting around for a few years. It should make a nice brush. The Knot is silver tip badger from Virginia Sheng.
Shaping is done. Marked for finger indents. Indents complete. Smooth and ready for finish. All that is left is finishing and gluing in the knot. Stain or natural? Hmmmm. Finishing gets done in the garage to avoid fumes in the house. It is too cold for finish. Hopefully next week.
Excellent work! I've got some pecan chunks stashed away that will soon become a brush and matching scales for a straight Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk
Natural it is. First coat of poly is on. Lesson learned, allow room for sanding the bottom. The profile isn't quite as I wanted it now that the bottom is sanded.
Final coat applied. There were the usual problems with slag, dust, and drips. As it is, it isn't the best finish I have done nor the worst. It is pretty good. I have yet to be completely satisfied with a finish, the bane of woodworking.
Have you ever used tru oil? Really easy, just time consuming since you put a fingertip amount on and leave it a day, buff, reapply, build up at least a few coats like that. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk
No, I haven't used tru oil. I have used polymerized tung oil and quite like it. I choose polyurethane for its water protection.
It is finished. The knot was glued in this morning. I had trouble getting the knot down into the recess. It would have been better to get it half a millimetre or so deeper. I was starting to damage the bristles trying to get it further seated. It is how it will remain. it was a fun project. There have been a few lessons learned for the next one. Thanks for all the comments and support.
Nice work! Let us know how it works, I've got a finest/2-band from them on the way Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk
