Recently won this Fuller brush on ebay and it will be my first resoration. Plan on going with a silvertip badger knot from the Golden NIB. Any hints/tips/thoughts/etc. are welcome. (Ebay pics)
I am going to show my ignorance on brush restorations. Let me ask a couple questions. 1. How do you get the old knot out? Is it difficult? 2. How do you keep the new knot in? Sorry if these are elementary questions. Thanks,
1. Although I've never removed a knot, here's a link. I know some folks cut the hair down as far as they can, then use a drill and/or dremel to get the rest of the knot out. 2. Epoxy.
Came home last night and found that it had arrived. The auction included a mug although I was principally interested in the brush handle. I'm a face latherer but I might have to try it out sometime. The handle is in great shape with only a couple of minor scratches and a small chip on the edge of the bottom. First I tried the Teiste method. After 30 minutes it was still solid. Gave it 15 more minutes then realized another method was required. Grabbed a pair of metal shears and cut the hair down. Then I used a 7/8" spade bit. Drilled a small hole in middle of the shelf which I will use to pack the bottom full of two part epoxy. Not sure about adding weight. Maybe a coin or two Now I need to order a 22mm knot and sand/polish a little bit. To be continued..........
Upon further reflection decided upon fine badger instead of silvertip as I enjoy a little exfoliation. Ordered one from TGN and now the waiting begins. All polished up and ready for the knot.
You can call and ask Tony or Vanessa, generally though I go by 2mm smaller than the actual hole; if it doesn't fit just ship it back if you haven't tried to modify the plug
OK, great. Thanks for the info. Next week I'll be in Tel Aviv flea market, maybe something will catch my eye and I'll do my own restoration project. I wonder if you can fit a knot in something else that fits nice in my hand. Any ideas?
Well if you have drilling or dremel skills, I don't see why a small statue or figurine wouldn't work; I know Jody made a brush handle out of a Buddha figurine lol.
Anything that fits and strikes your fancy the possibilities are endless. Good luck in finding something you like. And don't forget to share pics with us when you do. Last night I thought about it and decided it would make my life easier if I just removed the shelf entirely.
Thanks for reminding me, another term I need to add; shelf! By the way, loctite's marine epoxy resin does quite well as a shelf, just be careful with the handle as the resin heats up when curing.
My 22mm two band finest badger knot from TGN is here (that was quick) Looks like this project is rapidly approaching completion. Went to dry fit the knot and found it just a hair to tight. 320 grit sandpaper followed by 00 steel wool followed by some leather polish and it fits like a dream. Two nickel shelf to be continued....
