While rummaging through a box of stuff I came across a couple of Straights that I bought about 15 years ago from a shop in Tucson. They are both marked Solingen made in German. I taught myself how to use them by reading a few articles at the library as I recall. The black handle one has a blade that is in good shape. The one with the gold lettering and yellow scales has been dropped. There is a small nick toward the end of the blade. Either a guest or one of my nephews then attempted to cover it by hitting it on some kind of stone looks like. I had put them aside prior to that because I did not have a hone. So a couple of questions. Are they worth getting back to shave ready? Who would you folks recommend and any kind of ball park figure on the cost?
Contact @gssixgun , or @HolyRollah , they are the resident professional honers around here. They both look to be in good shape, and very usable/repairable condition.
Are there any "Brand" names on them ??? The one etched "First Class" looks to have a legit bevel on there which is a good sign
They both look like they could be turned into excellent shavers with minimal work (even the one with the chip in the edge...it's still small enough that it can be honed out).
@gssixgun is the man...as far as the cats that I have actually met...He is like a Mozart who plays a str8 like a stradivarious!....He's also a real shooter hence his user name...You guys have alot in common. looks like he already checked your blades out! Talk about service
Millimeter scale above each bevel The edge on the Yellow one to start The edge on the Black one to start Chosera 1k took it all out and left a nice even clean bevel on both
Excellent news. They looked good to go, even from the initial photos. Those enlarged photos make even minor edge blemishes look like a scary big issue.
I think they are off brand Dovo or the like.. they seem fine, the only thing I can't test is the longevity of the edge only you will know that.. The steel felt and looked fine to me so I think you have some good shavers there
