Hello fellow shavers! Yesterday I acquired this beauty from a colleague. It was in very bad shape, but cleaned up pretty nice. I'm guessing it's a pretty standard Gillette New Improved from 1921 due to it's serial number and knurling on the bottom of the handle. Silver plated. Can someone confirm that or do I have something else? What is a realistic street-price, not pumped up eBay like...? Congrats. That is pretty razor and a great shaver. Enjoy it. I cannot help with price in your area, but I would take a look at ebay sold auctions. I just took a look at sold auctions for New Standard and New Improved razors and cased versions seem to range from about $50 to $125 US with uncased versions slightly lower.
Thank you for that! I just had my first shave with it today, and I'm still smiling here several hours on! Man, what a great and easy BBS result. I don't intend on selling it, but it's nice to know what they usually go for. They're not common here, so I couldn't find any prices. But since I paid the equivalent of 15 USD for this, I'm guessing I didn't do too bad I didn't knew what I had before I got home to clean it. Only problem now is, that my interest in these old OC's have increased a lot! I had low expectations, but got a pleasant surprise.
After snagging it for that price, I would buy a lottery ticket. If you are enjoying that one, take a look for a New Deluxe. It is another great shaver.
I love the New Improved razors. I would like to see pictures of yours, too. I had one my Tuckaway (1921) rhodium plated. My gold new standard is in pretty good shape. I cannot find a serial number on it though.
It was in a really bad state when I got it, very dark, grimy, leftover hair, scum and what not. After a ultra sonic clean and baking soda wash followed by a quick Peek polish it looked totally different. I'm still stoked! This was my first shave with it - perhaps you recognise an item?
I do recognize the vintage JR brush. HA! One of the early ones. Still going... I think it was my first brush to go abroad.
LOL, yeah quite a few numbers have been produced after. It's still in great shape and one of my favorite handles to date!
