A friend gave me this razor & after some research, it appears to be a Gillette Old Type Single Ring. If I am correctly reading the etching on the head & handle (M700148 & PAT.NOV.15:04 respectively), this looks like it was manufactured between 1919-1920, according to Badger & Blade's dating wiki. I cannot determine if this is a thin head (102) or thick head (102A).

I was unable to find many references to this razor here, does anyone have any experience with one? It should be interesting trying an open comb after my Super Speed. Ironically, I was trying to eschew Gillette in favor of a manufacturer that supports DE shaving but their hardware keeps finding its way into my possession. Comparing the 2, the 1948 SS looks positively futuristic with its TTO mechanism.

The pictures are post cleanup (10 minute boil in water, toothbrush & scrubbing bubbles, toothbrush & toothpaste). I cannot help thinking I need some wire brushes (too harsh?) to clean the inside & to scrub up the handle more. Does thinking about acquiring tools for the cleanup of vintage razors indicate a disorder has set in?

Nice looking razor! Isn't that a big boy or big fellow?

Where can I get a friend like that?

Nice, well played good Sir, my old style was quite the shaver. However I piffed it to my daughter for the legs and pits detail. It should have a serial number on the bottom portion, don't know if you can cross reference this number to a model but for sure you can tell what year it was made.

With that serial number it is an 1920 model 102.
