As you may already know if you post in the SOS thread I used one of these blades for at least 17 great shaves over the past month. The pack I have was kindly sent by B&B member robxcarlson who apparently got them in Mexico, but I'd like to find an online retail source for these if possible.

    Chris,
I also got some from Rob. There are nice(still have 2 left). I wasnt able to find them any where. He said that he gets them right over the border but dont know how many he can get. They are good but have since found better. 7 oclocks are much smoother IMO.

I can try to get some more of these... I've not been over the border in a little while, but it's just a short drive and I'd like some more of these blades myself. The only mention I've ever seen of these online is the post I made about them at B&B. I'd love to find out if these are current production or NOS... I sent an email to Gillette do Brasil, but never got a response.

Hi Rob!! Good to see you on this side of things. :D

I'd definitely take a few packs if you decide to travel across the border. I'm sure I'm not the only person interested in these either, you could probably start your own blade distribution company. ;)

    Thanks for the offer!

JayKay 3000 posts and all I got was this lousy title

Just a theory, but wouldnt they be NOS. Before gillette started producing the super thin DE blades they had the thicker variety, so they had to distinguish between the two on the packaging. But after a good amount of time all the companies making DE blades were using the super thin blades, so they no longer had to distinguish between the two. So unless the name stuck, just for these mexican blades, they're probably NOS.

These blades are actually Brazilian, made by Gillette do Brasil. These are just the South American variant of the Gillette Super Thin. I don't know the history of the use that name by Gillette - If these are NOS, then there must be a lot of them, because the pharmacy where I bought them says that they still order these from their supplier. However, they weren't willing to give me a discount for a bulk purchase.

I hope that $18.00 price tag is in pesos...

Maybe I'll check some of the local Latin American groceries near my station. I'll bring the pic, too....

The peso has dropped recently... these were $1.75 when I bought them in May or June.

MTGRAYLING - you and I may be the only ones that truly care - but...

On eBay you can find new Thai made Gillette Super Thin blades, so I'm guessing that the name is still used by Gillette in some parts. I checked Gillette do Brasil's website again, and they only list 3 blade cartridge razors, but I did email them one more time through a customer service response form to inquire if they still make the blades. My current Super Thin Mejoradas have a B-3 date code, which could be early 80's or (I think) 2006 (that is if they still use the date codes on blades). I found a company in Guatemala that sells personal care products to pharmacies in Latin America - they show the Gillette Super Thin blade on their price list as of Dec 2008. I wrote them to ask if this is the Mejorada blade and if it's possible to buy direct from them in America - their price is about $17 for 100 blades.
Assuming the pharmacy where I originally found the blade still stocks them, then 100 blades would cost $25.80 at the current exchange. I'll try to make a trip soon and see but it'll be a couple of weeks.

    Rob,

I appreciate all your work on this. $.17/blade is one heck of a deal for Gillette blades! I'll be interested if they will sell direct and if not perhaps I could have you pick up a few packs on your next voyage south if it wouldn't be too much trouble. Thanks again Rob!!

Sorry, but what does NOS mean??

NOS = New Old Stock and the term is usually reserved for old store stock. I'm pretty sure they're still producing these blades though.

New Old Stock. Generally means a product is still in it's package, but was made some time ago. It's old, but still new.

Well that makes WAY more sense than 'Not Otherwise Specified'! I couldn't make heads or tails out of that!

Now it all comes into focus - a brain stropping for sure!!

    thnx

Not to be an ass here, but what exactly is the fascination with trying to obtain difficult to find blades anyway? Aren't there enough easily obtainable, good quality blades on the market already?

    Me no get it.

    I guess so.....

I get it with razors, but not blades.

    Really, what's the difference?

Ah, I don't know. A razor will last until I'm in my grave and beyond, and a blade gets used a few times and then is tossed. ;)
