Do any other brands feel the need to put sticky stuff on their blade when packaging? It doesn't run or wash or wear off. All it does is make it hard to position the blade properly. Not so much in a TTO but definitely in any 2/3 piece razor.
I've never seen one that bad, but then I shy away from Gillette anything when it comes to shaving. It should be wax, not glue so maybe some hot water or a lighter might help it?
I would add that I love GSB blades, have gone through over 100 of them, and have also never seen anything like that. Hopefully just an odd batch.
That one does seem worse than my blades, but both my feathers and 7 o'clock yellows both have sticky glueish stuff on them when i put them in the razor.
This is the second out of a 5pack I got with a sample pack order. The first Gillette blade was the same. Good cutting blade. Got 4 shaves out of it and could have probably gone more but tossed it after today's butchering of my face(my fault, not the blades). Anyway, after the second blade had the same glue stuff on it, I had to ask if it was normal or what.
Several other blades have some type of wax or glue on them. That is a very heavy coating on that blade though. I've never really gotten an answer why they put it on them but it's just part of the process for some it seems.
Just a theory - the wax may be to hold the blade in the wrapper so that it doesn't cut through or move about and damage the edge??
I've considered that theory. Or else it might be to help hold it in place in the razor while tightening.
Many have the wax on. The PERMA-SHARP SUPERS have them also. It doesn't bother me much anymore just use hot water and a toothbrush to clean in between blade changes in my three-piece razors. Not sure if it makes a difference but I always face the spots toward the cap.
Teflon is slick. My guess is wax paper on teflon using "glue" suspends the edge in a void space beneath the fold...protecting it while in transit.
Every blade produced in Petersburg comes with glue dots. It used to be 4, but lately they've reduced it to only 2. I still don't know why they do it since Rapira and Voskhod do just fine without any glue at all
I read that the purpose is to keep them from shifting in the paper covering as some have mentioned. It is just paraffin wax so it should soften and clean up with warm water.
I don't think it concerned older generation shavers. I can't remember my father or Grandfather sitting around with a Richmond Pilsner having a deep and meaningful about wax spots on their razor blades. Mind you I could be wrong
Astra SP is my go-to blade. They have the wax spots. I just ignore 'em. Hasn't affected any of my shaves yet.
They had an episode of How It's Made where they did blades. I think they explain the reason for the dots in it, but I don't remember why.
Wax is one thing if it washed off with some hot water, but these dots on my Gillettes are still tacky after 4shaves and hot water rinse and rubbing.
No wax spots on Personna blades. I did use some GSB in my flair tip and learned that facing the spots up sometimes caused the doors to open hard, flipped the blade out once. i now position the spots toward the base plate.
