Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning, which means there will be six more weeks of winter. They dragged him out of his 30'x30' climate controlled burrow and he saw his shadow. This all started in 1886. Far as I'm concerned it could end today. If you're into this, Animal Planet will have a special about it tonight at 2200.
If they blindfolded the fuzzy little rodent first, he'd never see his shadow and the official verdict every time would be "Winter's over." Or would that be cheating or something? Mind you, we can sometimes have snowfalls in May, so I've never understood where this six weeks crap comes from anyway...
If they wanted to they could make a whole little ceremony of it for the tourists: single muted drum leading the procession as they march blindfolded Punxsutawney Pill to the post and strap him to it with a cigarette dangling out of his little mouth. Brass band plays a dirge in the background. Then they announce he didn't see his shadow just before he's shot by the Official State Varmint Hunter. Band starts playing happy springtime music... I think that would be a lot more inspiring then the current rigamarole.
I live in Texas, where it is perpetually Summer time! The weather report says it is mostly in the high 70s this week.
Sounds about right for a rodent, lol I love the movie "Groundhog day," and I watch it most every Feb 2nd
I will venture to say that is still better forecasting accuracy than many of the "meteorologists" out there!
In Georgia, our groundhog is called General Beauregard Lee. He also predict an early spring, although February and March are usually worse than December and January here
