Well, having ADHD and the desire to learn to hone a razor are not always great combinations. I traded with @MattCB for a nice Wade & Butcher Wedge the other day and the razor came to me with a decent bevel set. I had to work that night and I was anxious to try the razor so I set out to set a nice shaving edge on my trusty 4k/8k. I used 3m Super88 electric tape on the spine and within a short amount of time had a pretty keen edge. So, happy with the edge, and pressed for time, I decided I would go from 8k to stropping and see what kind of edge I had been able to achieve. I VERY carefully removed the tape from the spine. Well after removing the tape I saw I had quite a bit of adhesive residue on the spine and tang. So at this point my brain says "Hey Steve, go in the garage and grab some of the many gallons of auto detailing solvents you sell, and properly and safely clean that razor to a nice shine!" Sadly, my ADHD/Simian/Dude brain says, "Nah dude..... That's 30 feet too far to walk. Who's got time for that? Just scrape it off with your thumbnail and pick off the rest." Guess which voice I listened too? Off I go cleaning it using option #2 until my right index finger worms it's way in front of the blade and then....... Whack! ** GRISLY PIC ** Oops....... That was a grizzly pic Yup. The first picture is the skin that should be where the big red spot is in picture two. It sucks when you have to call your wife saying, "Ummmmm hun.... I really think I might need you to take me to the ER....." Well at the end of the day, no stitches as I have an avulsion cut. Basically I shaved that huge chunk off, but it's just skin, albeit deep. It's gonna take a while to heal, but no nerve or ligament or structural damage. Many of you know my primary occupation is a law enforcement officer. While I am planning on retiring in maybe 2 years, I went into a brief panic thinking I just destroyed my trigger finger. Needless to say, the MAN above loaned me two guardian angels this day. I am looking at a week off and then I should be good to go back to work. I just wanted to post this to serve as a visual reminder to those of you who are like me. SLOW DOWN, PAY ATTENTION AND LISTEN TO YOUR COMMON SENSE BRAIN! While I can laugh know, this could have really been bad. I hope none of you have to go through this!
Oh later that afternoon, after I had to call off sick from work........ I shaved with that very razor! Much to my wife's chagrin. She just shakes her head and said "That's why I never had boys.... I have you"
Yowsa! That's a big reminder that one can never be too cautious when handling a straight razor. Whether cleaning, restoring or honing, one needs to respect the edge. I've had my share of bloody slices in handling a couple hundred of razors (Glen @gssixgun I'm sure has had some nasty moments in the 1000s he's handled), but with each cut, I'm learning to change my procedures to minimize the risk.
Sorry for your misfortune, Steve. That's why this 66 year old man is happy just to use a DE and not subject myself to fillet of Dzia Dzia. ... To be continued... Don
I have to admit I feel bad about what happened... but I really like the frameback TI I traded for it BTW, how was the shave?
Yeppers And messing with Tape too just like @TheFiveO Ever noticed in my honing videos when I always say leave the tape hanging over the front of the blade while you smooth it out and only cut it after... Cost me 5 stiches in my thumb learning that one All kinds of tiny cuts over the years but that is just one of the hazards of messing with some of the sharpest steel known to man...
Hey, nice setup with the bear photo. And then the next one with "whats that supposed to be".......and then Hope it heals up quick.
Holy cow that made me cringe! Normally not affected by gore, but I could so easily see that happening to me. Hope ya heal fast!
I'm glad I don't tape the spines when I touch up my razors. I'm sure I would do the same thing. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
I've seen bigger cuts under a Band-Aid. Seriously though, I did something similar to the top of my knuckle a year ago. I could see cartilage. I stuck some super glue on it and called it good. It took a while to heal, and left quite the scar. I don't use SE blades to trim stuff anymore.
Yup, that's a good one! Don't be alarmed, but it may make a scar After more than 15 years in the military and not so much as a stitch, once I became a chemist about every 6 months or so I'd be off to the doc to get something sewn back together. I did way more damage to myself with broken laboratory glassware than I ever did in the Army or Navy. Karma can be an ugly mistress...
I'm sorry you were injured. Thanks for reminding us all about the hazards we're dealing with. Heal up quickly!
Dang that is gnarly looking, but a reminder that we are dealing with sharp instruments is never a bad reminder. You just could have said something though no need to hurt yourself ; ) JK I hope you recover quickly.
