Not using the plastic humidor it came with, but I do have it attached to the lid. Did the glue on the magnet give out? Why 69% over 72%? And how do you recharge the Boveda packs?
Here n Florida, 69% works better for me - I prefer my cigars on the lower humidity side rather than higher. I find that some cigars that are overly humid have a much tighter draw. Many people like theirs in the low 60% range. For me, if a draw on a cigar remains too tight for much over a half inch, I'll pitch it. I'm not talking a little snug -- I mean like sucking a pea through a straw! Besides, the packs usually settle in with humidity of approx. 3% higher than the stated % anyway. In a few cases, that plastic humidifier (that has nothing buut floridt sponge inside) has fallen when properly moistened. Too heavy for the magnet. I got rid of that and replaced with beads, still too heavy. Then I discovered Boveda pouches in the desktop and haven't looked back. Could use beads in a container, but the Bovedas take up much less room and are lower cost. All this is my 2c. There is great discussions on the Cigar Asylum forum on this. Great guys and lots of good cigar stuff!
To recharge the Boveda packs when they get a bit hard and you can feel crystals... Put the pack(s) in a Tupperware with a soaked washcloth, sponge, etc. Make sure everything is clean and the cloth is not dripping - just really nice and wet. You do not want to get water onto the Boveda pack. Close and leave for a few weeks. Be patient. It will work. I keep two sets and start to recharge when the ones in the humi start to feel like they have a bit of ice inside with the liquid! Another goo dthing about the Boveda packs is that you can actually put them right on top of your cigars. I keep three or sometimes four in a 100 count desktop. top sides are on top of thin Spanish cedar strips (keep the thin cedar from your boxes) with the Bovedas just underneath. Bottom section has the Bovedas right on top of the sticks!
Very nice, if you pack it whic I usually do you can soak a paper towel with distiller water and place in a corner and just watch the hygrometer if it is above 65% just there some of the paper towel of and keep adjusting. Also the humidity will change according to the humidity in the house and outside but if you watch it for a few days you can find out how much paper towel you need. I used to use all the fancy jelly looking cubes in the tube and the green styrofoam thing in the black plastic box, they don't work much better than the paper towel and take up a lot of space. My way may not be pretty but I buy in bulk online so I can barely close if for several weeks and this method works
The advantage of something like Boveda packs and GOOD QUALITY beads is that these methods not only humidify, but they also dehumidify as well, keeping a stable desired % of humidity. They also do not have the potential for mildew, which will compromise your precious cigar collection!
