Forgive me for breaking up the party; I have only ever done DE shaving and was researching SE to potentially try it out. At this point all I would need is the razor and the blades.......in comparison to DE razor blades do the single edge run about .50 a piece on the cheap end and run up from there based on quality/brand? Obviously many razor options and would ultimately just come down to choice and budget but any recommendations on a starter would be appreciated.

Are you talking vintage Gem 1912 style razors, or modern Feather AC style?

What problems are there with the"El Jefé"? There is someone selling the head only in a lot on another forum. I've had it under consideration.

There were troubles with the casting or molding process. The tolerances are pretty terrible. It seems to very by user, but a guy needs to do some fiddling to get the blade aligned. Also, the threads are varying levels of abysmal from cap to cap. I have tried six or seven different handles, ranging from low end to high, and only founf two that will thread on all the way. (Both of them Maggards.)

He has them listed as blems on his website for $20. Personally, I really like mine. A lot. To me anyway, it is worth the fiddling around to make it work. At that price anyway.

I'm pretty sure @jmudrick didn't care for his in the least and sold it pretty much right away.

More along the lines of the Gem 1912 style single edge razors, I havent really considered straights to be honest.

I will let someone else comment on that, because I am FAR from an expert on the old Gems. As far as AC, I meant that they use those blades, as opposed to the Feather razors themselves. Razors like the Mongoose, Colonial General etc...

Do you use both hands, one razor in each? Probably more efficient that way. LOL

My intro, @HoosierTrooper piffed me a 1912, and a Micromatic open comb....Did it for me...
Depends on if you like mild or aggressive shavers....
Mild Starter: GEM Damaskeene 1912 , a most perfect razor.....I started with a EverReady 1912, it's a little more aggressive but equally perfect.
For Aggressive the EverReady 1914 or 1924s are incredible.....The Micromatics are aggressive and great shavers aswell.

Check out pics of the above and pick one you like the looks of...Also you should check out injectors....they are incredible....
    Mild: Schick I2
Agressive: E2 or any G type.....also PAL Injecto-matic....a perfect shaver, shaves deceptively aggressive because it feels so smooth, very smooth!

Good morning friends! Another fantastic shave was had last night with the PAL IM. This razor is so smooth yet incredibly efficient. I really focused on no pressure tonight because I think I might have over shaved a little last time. The result was an amazing 3 pass BBS. Have a great day my friends!

I send my blades on ahead via mail to be there when I arrive. I also always put my empty razor in the pocket change tray for easy inspection. That tends to make them happy as they don't have to open a bag and it doesn't slow the line down. :happy088:

    Razor: Schick L1 injector
    Brush: Trader Joe's synthetic
    Lather: Route 66 Twisted Tweed
Post: Witch hazel splash enhanced with Fine American Blend, Nivea sensitive balm
    WTG, XTG, XTG (upper face)

Nice shave this morning with Twisted Tweed. I am out of town and had more time than normal. Two full passes with an extra XTG pass for my upper face. Smooth, smooth is the word. I don't go for three passes like that very often. Fine American Blend and Nivea is a great way to finish it off.

    Have a great day!
