Haven't done a lot of digging so I could be way off. Is this a Fat Handle Tech? (No date code, so if so, that puts it between 1938-1949, if I read the info right.) It is (or "was") gold at one time. Can anyone confirm, or tell me what it is if it's not a FHT?
$7.00. I assume you ask because it's in really rough shape? I thought so too but figured it would at least be something that might be a restoration challenge and might be an eventual replate candidate. Or at least a sacrifice to the Dremel gods.
I do not consider that to be in rough shape. It is just dirty, to me rough means pits, corrosion, dents, bent teeth, etc. So as long as it cleans up nice and you did good.
I would rather find a razor with missing plating and tarnish that was in solid condition than a razor that had dents galore.
That's a nice find at a good price! The triangle slotted pre-war fat-handled Techs are one of the more desirable ones. They shave great and you could have it replated if you want and make it last another 75 years easy.
Great find. They clean up pretty good. It is fun to bring those old razors back to life and return them to their original purpose. I can't help but share mine. If you look closely you can see a little patina on it. Please post pictures after your cleaning.
Mine too. At least my favorite vintage Gillette. A Schick injector might beat it out if I opened it up to non-Gillettes.
Good for you. Nice score, especially for only $7!! Yes as has been said that is a Fat Handle Tech and IMO also they are "GREAT" face friendly razors.. I have them in both gold and nickel plate. If the plating comes off the brass and copper shine up really nice.
Yep, pre war Tech. My personal favorite of the three piece Gillettes. I find that of the many Gillettes i own, that model keeps coming up more frequently in the rotation. Take some scrubbing bubbles to it and go.
Scrubbing bubbles revealed a razor almost completely devoid of any remaining plating. So... I decided to clean it up the rest of the way, with an eye toward using it in its current (base metal) form or maybe spending the $ and getting a replate done on it. Hated to get rid of the remainder of the (minimal) plating that was left, but it was like 95%+ gone already. Cleaned up nicely, once I made the decision not to worry about the plating. See before and after below. (The pictures don't do either phase justice... It was in nasty shape when I got it. And now at least it's clean.) Before: After:
