I picked up a gold Monarch Razor for $12 AUD yesterday at an antique store. Have shaved with it today, and it was surprisingly good. I can't find any detail on the internet about this razor though, can anyone cast any light for me as to it's history/value please?
Sorry, I have no idea about the razor. I'm sure someone here will have a clue and be able to help you out. By the way, welcome to the Den! Be sure to sign up for the May Newbie Give-Away.
Welcome to TSD! Apart from the name, I'm not familiar with the British Monarch Razor, but here's a bit more info from a past thread. http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/british-monarch-gold-razor-and-souplex-mystery.21036/ It sounds like a great shaver Edit: fixed link
It is obviously made in England, very solid, with a nice heft and exceptional high quality. The case is Bakelite and it was made in the mid-1920's I believe. The Royal Lions Coat of Arms with Monarch Crown raised up on the case is really cool. From my research, it is the British version of the 1919 Big Fellow which was the last Old Type Style before Gillette converted to the New. The long tooth design, larger Big Fellow style handle, and weight makes it a forgiving open comb razor for heavier stubble, IMHO.
