I've always been curious about the oddball razors, and liked the looks of the Stubtails, and Monkey Tail razors. I know little about them, other than they look "Cool", and don't appear to have been produced for long. I bought one recently $10, and hopefully it will clean up well. All looks fairly intact. Any info on these razors would be nice. please post whatever Monkey Tail Razors you have, and what you know about them. Bengall Monkey Tail
Nothing on Monkey Tails??? Well anyway, It arrived in the mail today, and it was in better shape than expected. The blade was a little discolored, but, no noticeable pitting. The scales were in very good shape, and with a little light sanding, and a little wax, they should be shining nicely. Here are the pre-restoration photos. Bengall Monkey Tail
I saw these recently on Evil bay and though to myself: "self, who the hell would want one of these?" Now I have the answer to my question Just kidding Scott, just be careful you don't lose an eye while shaving with it
I've never seen one like that before. I wonder if it was made to be comfortable to hold and rest three fingers on it or wether it is just a design quirk.
It's comfortable in the hand. The tang wraps around a little farther. I haven't shaved with it yet, I still need to prettify it, and take it to the hones. Hopefully this weekend. It's not as crazy long as you might think.
I've had my eye on DePew 'The Perfect Razor' (1880s) monkey tails for some time. They are distinct and hard to come by in decent shape. They pop up on eBay from time to time and usually earn numerous bids($$).
Bengall Monkey Tail: After a little buffing of the blade, sanding of the scales, and waxing the scales.
I honed up, and shaved with the Bengall today. It was straight as an arrow, and honed up easily. The shave was fantastic, and gave a perfect shave. So, it is an excellent razor, and well worth the money.
Here's my monkey tail. It's a custom from Osiris Blades. It's somewhere between a quarter and half hollow and 8/8. Due to the weight, the long tail makes it much easier to grip and maneuver. It's as nimble to use as some of my smaller razors.
Here's a reference for size comparison showing a DePew 'The Perfect Razor' monkey-tail razor next to a 6/8" Red Imp...
I'm digging up an old thread, because I've an addition. Joseph Rodgers & Sons Cutlers To Their Majesties No.6 Norfolk Street Sheffield England. "Monkey Tail Razor" I haven't seen one of these before.
