I had the desire for a Wee Scot, but I suffer from being very cheap. Hence I built ... The Brass Bruiser A 24mm Maggard's synthetic knot set in a 3/4" hose cap. It's a great traveler or anytime brush and cost less than $10 to build.
Not cheap, frugal, but anyway. I was able to put this 20mm badger in a flashlight head for a travel brush. Total length a touch over three inches.
Aren't flashlights great for brush handles. I did these a while ago because I was bored and just had them lying around in the junk drawer. The last two were made from the same one, and the last one I call my GW Brush, as you can see from the second pic with a quarter behind the lens. The first one has a nickle behind it.
The Hardright had a major failure in the handle and used a coupler and the end of a flash lite to complete the handle. topped off the end with an Italian coin. With the black badger knot it's nice and scritchy.
I was remind when I saw @jimjo1031 Klenzo restore that I restored one a few months back. It's a Klenzo B1004 set with a 24mm Maggard's synthetic (sorry no before pics). I removed the old knot, weighted the handle, cleaned / polished and re-lettered; follow with re-knotting.
Some pics of restoration of a Hardright brush; I believe it's the predecessor to the Lime Beater. As received. Knot removed. Cleaned up and sanded (handle); and brass ring insert removed. Initial dying green. Chose to color with India ink (grass green). Much happier with this color; it covered the pigment of old white base coat in pores. now it's off to several coats of Teak oil. Waiting for synthetic horse hair. More to come ...
I sanded and cleaned handle with rubbing alcohol (to break any possibility of soap residue). I chose to use ink because sometimes paint can have difficulty adhering and bubble up. With ink there are lots of colors available and is very permanent. Didn't want thick coats of paint; this was two thin coats of ink from Hobby Lobby (~$5 bottle). Now I'm putting on several thin coats of Teak oil.
Well here is the finished Hardright with 22mm synthetic horse hair and gold lettering ... Over all height of 113mm. More to come ...
