The vinyl sales are almost certainly just a fad, for the reasons you noted. Also, it is infinitely easier to burn a few red book CDs than press a few vinyl records. That makes CDs attractive to street musicians, many of whom are quite good. For portability, FLAC is great. Pono is taking an interesting approach. As data storage becomes ever less expensive, Pono's technology becomes increasingly feasible. Sometimes older is better. Other times newer is better.
