    Hi all,

Brand new to DE shaving. Trying to choose my first one. I have pretty poor skin and I'm pretty sure one of the 'mild' razors is for me.

I know that everyone says I can't go wrong with a Merkur 34c (which I'd probably like AS WELL AS), but I don't feel it has the style I'm looking for.

I have seen a Muhle Kosmo (which I believe is similar to an r89), and with a bog oak handle it looks rather wonderful!! However there don't seem to be many reviews of this particular model, aside from the independent who gave it their best buy award.

Anyone have any experience of this razor - am I making a reasonable choice?

    Thanks

    Dan

    Thanks!
I have looked at them too... are they a better choice? I assumed since the heads are pretty much the same you are just choosing handle type...

I like the idea of a Gillette (think it was slim) but not sure I have confidence to buy vintage from eBay etc.

The heads are identical. There's also the Gillette Tech.

It is confusing getting started, a wealth of choices. All you can do is ask and then study the recomendations and take your best shot.
First let me say I am a 3 piece fan over a two piece so EJ R89 over the Muhle34C, the reason more flexability(you can use many different handles with a 3 piece)also the EJ R89 is a bit more inexpensive in price for the same material/quality of razor IMO.
Remember most modern razors are copies of vintage types that have been around for a long time, the difference being in quality of material and sometimes craftsmanship.
So here are my choices for you based on mildness, price and quality:
    Vintage
    3 piece:
Gillette Fat handle or Ball End tech
    TTO:
Super Speed or IMO the even better, but a bit more expensive 47-49 Aristocrat.
    Adjustable:
Gillette Fatboy, Slim, or Super Adjustable
    Modern
ER89, any of the Maggard 3 piece razors, Parker
I've never used a modern adjustable.

There are many many more to choose from SE, Injector, Slant bar, Stavette, Straight, but these will give you someplace to start your research. I hope this helps a little. Any other questions just ask. :happy088:

Thanks so much! I'm very keen on this fat handle tech but it still has 2 days to go on eBay what's a reasonable price for something like that?

Welcome to The Den!! I think you'll like it here! Once you get a razor (or beforehand, if you like) drop into the 30 Day Rule/Focus. Here you'll find some of the nicest folks assembled on the internet. They can guide you along the way and help you get great shaves from your razor. A phrase you'll see pop up a lot is "Technique Trumps Tools", and it's very true. Don't let yourself get caught up in hype from reviews - a good shave can be had using any razor, and any blade. Conversely, a bad shave can be had using any razor, or any blade.
