NOS Super Adjustable Black Beauty NOS Dilemma

Ok, looking for advice. Long story short, my birth year is 1981, and I've had my eye out for a B2 SA for a few years now. I even posted some WTB threads in a few forums last year, but no luck. It's hard to find one from 1981 at all, much less the second quarter.

That leads me to my dilemma. Yesterday my wife picked up this beauty in an antique store for my birthday (today) :greet002:. NOS Super Adjustable, black plastic baseplate with the diamond knurling. That means it "could" be my coveted 1981...but I'll never know without opening it.

I'm not a collector, so I say use it if you've got it. Thus far, I've been into aggressive razors, and my wide open adjustables are my favorites. Since the SA is milder, I'm not sure it will make the top of the rotation. I'm also more partial to the shorter handles. Because of that, I'm not sure I have much interest in one UNLESS it's my birth year. But, this one is NOS. I can't even find my birth year for sale at all, much less in pristine condition.

Being NOS, and based on the quick research I've done, I could probably sell it for 10 - 20 times what we paid for it. That would give me some funds to spend on other shaving gear, and I could still keep my eyes open for the birth year version. Or I could offer it up as trade bait for someone who does have a B2. But again, it's very possible that I might be holding a NOS B code razor.

What do I do folks? [IMG]

You can't read the date code thru the package? So it's a mystery until it's opened.

I would put it away for a rainy day seeing as you don't have a lot in it. The fact that it is unopened adds huge value down the road. Sit on it and find something else to shave with.

If you aren't into collecting NOS, then sell it. You can always get the one you want, in very good condition, for a third the price. Then, you will have money left over to give to your wife, so she can shop for more razors for you.

If you're really set on a birth year razor, well this could be the one. Open it and find out.

If it's not your birth year, feel free to use it or sell it. If you feel that you would rather make a nice profit on it, don't open it. Just post it on eBay.

I've often wondered what I would do if I stumbled across NOS like that. It's a tough decision.

I searched the words for numbers resembling a date, nothing. Interesting to note is the price tag. It looks like a comma and not decimal.

Well, here's my 2 cents worth. Sell and make a good profit and put the money away til you find your birth year razor. Or keep it for a better profit later on. If this isn't it, then you'd probably wish you could kick yourself, you know where. I've seen NOS Supers sell for good money.

Is having a birth year razor really worth losing out on a descent chunk of change? The biggest part of the dilemma is that your wife bought you a present she thought you'd like.

So what if it is your birth year razor? Is that going to make that mild razor more aggressive to your liking? You put down more valid reasons to get rid of it.

I'd hold on to it for a while UNOPENED while looking for the birth year razor of your liking.

    Edit - #Happy Birthday!!!

Open it. It's OK. Your wife gave you a razor to use!

Since your wife picked it up it would have even greater sentimental value if it was the one. So I say open it even though your the chances are slim. If you don't you will always wonder. Regarding your second concern about mildness when you do find the one just use it on your birthday. Similarly, I have a dated Super Speed I only use in only in May to commemorate my high school graduation.

Set on 6 or higher will make it a fairly aggressive razor. Even if it's not your birth year (but it could be), think of how nice it would be to shave with a NOS Gillette.

It's hard to ignore what you could make selling it, but it's harder to ignore the pleasure of using that razor for a lifetime. The $200 you get if you sell it will be spent in a blink of an eye. On the other hand, having a brand new 1980's SA is priceless!

I've just convinced myself! Open the darn package already and shave!
