Got a working Segal razor laying around your den? Did you know it really is a darn fine shaver? Want to try yours out as originally intended? Here's your chance. I have a box of 20 mint Shaeffer blades, one of which just gave me a fantastic BBS in my run-down, ugly, buck-toothed Segal. If you want to try out your Segal with one of these blades, I will send one (1) blade to you with the following proviso: post on this thread a picture of your Segal along with a piece of paper showing your signed TSD handle...and that's it. Once you've done that, PM me your vitals and I'll send you the blade (probably after the first, though). I will also end this PIF around January 5 or so. Sorry but due to postage cost I have to restrict the offer to CONUS only. I doubt many Segals made it outside the U.S. anyway.
Pif ended but I am going to post a pic of my Segal anyway. I don't think it is an ugly razor at all . Sure it has 70 year old soap scum in the teeth but when showing my collection. It is always talked about the most.
Is your blade usable? If not, my PIF's not over yet. The ugly comment is because my original Segal had several missing teeth and was badly gouged on the cap...it was unusable and UGLY. But someone then gave me a boxed one. Very nice looking razor, when they're intact.
The blade should be fine Ive never opened it. I found it in a flea market a blade still in the head . I was going to use that one as pattern to alter a standard DE and shave with it. Have not done so yet. It just sit on a shelf just like that really don't want to use that one.
Take it from one of several guys who've tried the cutout method: it's way more trouble than it's worth. So is grinding down the baseplate on the Segal. So wat I ended up doing is slitting one end of a stainless blade, where the two halves are joined. Slide that slit over the cap's riser post, center the blade, then clamp the head down tight. It should center pretty well but you can adjust it if it doesn't. It's definitely shaveable that way and a LOT less work.
Thanks alot for the info gorgo!! I have two Segals a Silver and a Gold, now maybe I can try using them with my favorite blades....
