Iso-blu is a 50% isopropyl alcohol mixture that includes camphor, glycerine, eucalytus, and menthol. I cut the ISO-BLU with a 86% witch hazel product at 50/50. I just can't imagine another splash feeling any better on my face. Now with that being said, I do enjoy a little sting and the more menthol the better for me. This mix costs about 3 bucks and will last forever. Tweaking the alcohol volume obviously is easy. I use a small travel size bottle for the working product. Hope someone else can use this recipe to their benefit.
I have seen the Iso-blu at Walmart, drug store chains, dollar general, etc. There are several companies that make the 86% witch hazel. They will be found at the same stores as the above item. There is a "homemade" thread somewhere on the forum that you can find a ton recipes. This one is simple, economic, and effective for me. Iso-Blu = $1.50 Witch Hazel = $0.97
Thanks for this thread, I made a 50/50 mix and really like it. Plan on adding some m-bomb and a small amount of glycerin soon.
I have tweaked this mixture to a 70/30 mix WH to Iso/blu, to this I added about 1 tsp glycerin and a pinch menthol crystals in a 12 oz bottle and I am very happy. It's soothing and still has a little alcohol bite and the cooling sensation from the extra menthol. On days when I don't want the menthol I use the plain WH.
I've been happy with my menthol/alum boosted Dickinson's but this does sound interesting. The camphor and eucalyptus add to the burn though, don't they?
I was just killing time at WM while the oil was being changed and saw the Iso-Blu for $1.50, but right next to it was Sonoma Sport Cooling Sports Rub for under a buck. It doesn't list camphor and eucalypus, which I'm wary of, only menthol 1.25% and some capsicum frutescens, whatever that is. It's about 90° today so I slapped some on when I got to the car, not expecting much to happen. It's now 20 minutes later and the back of my neck is still chilled. To me, the performance is pretty much the same as I recall from Osage Rub, maybe a hair less, but the scent is very vaguely reminiscent - believe it or not - of blue Aqua Velva. Very faint and gone quick, but not the pure medicinal smell you'd expect. For under a buck, it's great stuff. I highly recommend y'all pick up a bottle.
