So just about a month into my journey with A Safety Razor. I've tried searching but not found the right thread I guess. I am using a Merkur 34C

    1. What type of cleaning routine / products do I need to use to clean the razor?

    2. How often?

    3. What other maintenance is needed if any?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Three-piece razors are the easiest to maintain. No moving parts. Rinse after every shave and thoroughly buff dry all parts on a dry, absorbent towel. Reassemble, but don't tighten down. That's it.

And if it gets any soap scum build-up, soapy water & a toothbrush.

About once a year or every other year I would soak mine in some rubbing alcohol then towel dry. Makes look all shiney and new.

All good advice. I also have an old toothbrush dedicated to cleaning incoming razors.

After reading the above, there's nothing I could add that's constructive.
But, you could get a nice vintage Gillette :D rather than that Merkur. Fleamarkets are good spots to get one in the wild.

I don't bother anymore. Used to, but quit once I realized the water isn't as hard here as it is in Ohio. Now it's loosen the cap/doors, rinse it off, shake it hard and blow off the excess. Done.

When I find one that's all brass, say an old Super Speed, I now just run it through the dishwasher. So far it's worked great with no issues.

here are the only real semi-facts to concern yourself with.

    1) If it's zinc, it needs a bit more care than brass.
    2) If it's brass, it's almost indestructible

Shave, rinse, dry it off, hang it up. Periodically clean a bit more thoroughly.

With my old black handled SuperSpeed, I often just open the doors slightly, rap the side of it against my palm a few times (not the BLADE sides) to knock out the worst of the water, and hang it up. 30 years on, it's still in very good shape, and that's with the first 20 years being with hard well water.
