To me this looks like a Sheffield blade. Its marked F Westpfal, New York on one side, and etched ACME on the other. F Westpfal imported razors from the 1870s through the late 1920s from what I have been able to find. Pictures are from the auction. (I need to stop dropping low ball bids, this is the second one I have won this weekend.) Any additional information would be appreciated.
I have a Naniwia 1K, three different Welsh slate hones (Dragon's Tongue, Yellow Lake, and a black one,) an American Natural from Colorado, a purple slate that is softer and finer than the Welsh ones, an unknown greenish blue stone, a Washita type Arkansas, and a Translucent Arkansas. I don't really have many mid-grade stones, but have done pretty well using slurries and one stone honing methods. The Translucent Arkansas and the Colorado Natural are both pretty good finishers.
I haven't gotten this razor yet, but will be honing it once it arrives. The humpback tang and double shoulder looks like a Wade and Butcher to me. Any more experienced SR folk agree or disagree?
@Drygulch Adam the only reference I found for the Importer Westpfal and ACME stamp shows it as a Solingen razor BUT I am not 100% sure of the source Edit: just found 3 more references to the Importer and all of them show Germany or Solingen
All of the other razors with this maker marked Germany that I found were Kangaroo Brand. Did you find the same, Glen? I have a couple of hardware store brands marked Germany, but they don't have the humpback shape. Either way, I think this will be a cool razor. A light sanding on the scale, honing, and should be ready to go. There is a Cutlery shop in New York called H. Westpfal that I have seen mentioned for sharpening. I sent the store an email asking if there was any relation to the Straight Razor. I will post an update if I hear anything.
2 Acmes and 3 Kangaroos The Hump back is also akin to the Henckels and also much like the #14's of many types also But that may or may not mean all that much Nothing that gives me a 100% certain yet,,, but it is leaning toward Solingen so far anyway
Sweet deal! My Henry Hill from Solingen has a similar shape. I don't really know anything further about it though.
