I just bought a tin of Sudsy Soapery Citrus and Bay soap and was so impressed with it, I thought I'd share my thoughts. Disclaimer. I'm actually not very good at reviews. I'll do my best. Also, this is my opinion, and YMMV. This is a vegan, triple butter soap. They are based in Belleville, IL, and have a storefront at the Soulard Farmers Market in St Louis, MO. The soap ingredients include, stearic acid, coconut oil, castor oil, shea, kokum, and cocoa butters, fullers earth, bentonite clay, glycerin, lanolin, plus some other stuff. This is the smaller 3.5 oz tin of soap, it is filled almost to the top with a small amount of room for loading. The label is waterproof and very clean and simple. The scent off the puck is not very strong, a slightly spicy orange scent. However, upon lathering, it woke up big time. Have you ever smelled Constant Comment hot tea? Think orange, cinnamon, bay, and other spices. It's a really really good cold weather scent that really filled the room. During application of the lather i kept remarking to myself and my wife how good it smelled. The lather itself, it started off almost greasy while loading. The proto lather keeps building until you have a thick gooey creamy mess, in a good way. I splashed a little water on my face and went to work. Immediately I was impressed with this lather. This may be the densest, thickest and slickest lather I've experienced. It didn't take a whole lot of water to get a workable lather going. It had a wide water tolerance and I kept adding more water until it was shiny and yet still it kept it's cushion and density. The slickness and cushion, were wonderful. Among the best I've ever used. Secondary slickness, really great. Just a drop of water smeared around my face gave enough slickness for another pass easily. Post Shave... Really great. Almost really didn't need a splash. I opted for one anyhow. Skin felt nourished and soft. This is up in my top two or three soaps right now. Granted, I haven't used some of the ultimate luxury soaps out there, I'm on a budget. But of the soaps I've used, this is right there. It's in my winter rotation now. Enjoy my crappy lather porn. I've never been good at that. And my bathroom lighting is bad.
Very nice, there is a tin of the mint Soap Sudsery in the box, has a nice minty scent. Many people have called this a cream, but I find it to be more of a croap, not triple milled, but at least this tin is much more firm than a cream. Anways, looking forward to trying this stuff and see what all the hype is all about. Nice review as well brother.
Thanks for the review. Sudsy Soapery is a great producer; and is definitely a top-tier performer for me. I definitely suggest giving their products a try.
Great review. There was a lot of buzz about these guys a little while back and they've been on my radar for some time. The triple butter sounds interesting. The first time I used a soap with shea butter, it felt incredible, so I'd imagine that even more conditioning butters would feel even better.
This write up is no joke. @youngunn really knows his stuff. I can attest to this soap as well. The lather, cushion, and post shave feel are tops...and I have used Martin de candre, pannacrema, barrister and Mann, Stirling, etc.
I've tried somewhere between 400 and 500 soaps including just about all of the high end ones in existence. Sudsy Soapery is the second best I've encountered thus far, only bested by the much more expensive PannaCrema Nuavia. I really like their Lavender & Peppermint scent.
Great review, thanks for sharing. Years ago when I worked for a company that drilled holes in the ground for oil exploration, we used bentonite to seal the holes, as it would expand when mixed with water. I wonder if this property adds to the lather in some way.
The Lavender & Peppermint is a great scent. I also like the Sandalwood & Myrrh, but I think the L&P is going to be my favorite of their scents.
I just ordered all of their new line of aftershave balms that were announced yesterday. I already own all of the soaps. Their offering 20% off of all their products right now with the code "NEW17". https://sudsysoapery.com/
More bad influences in this thread... sigh. Based on Tim's review and the coupon code, I just ordered a shave soap, a deo, and 2 shampoo bars.
I got my order a little over a week ago, so I guess it's time for a mini review. I ordered: 2 shampoo bars (which I haven't used yet; saving for travel) Natural deo paste; original scent White Sage & Lime shaving soap The deo paste: the scent is really weird and camphorus. It does die down, but it's off-putting. At least for the first hour or so, I imagine it would be pretty noticeable to anyone near you. More so, the paste leaves my pits feeling greasy and it just doesn't control odor sufficiently (at least for me). The shave soap... I didn't like the presentation. I'm guessing this is a "hot process" soap due to the cottage cheese appearance of the soap. While I'm sure I got the weight I was paying for, there were a lot of gaps in the jar which would lead one to believe that he was not getting the paid-for weight of soap. Plus, as I said, I just don't like the look of the cottage cheese texture. Scent: was... ok. I like sage and I love lime. I'm not sure that they work together in any way that's special. The sage scent dominated, without doubt. But, it did project "clean" and it didn't linger past shaving. The lather took a little bit to generate when the soap was new, but I've got it worked out. The soap is on the thirsty side. Shave: this is where this soap shines. This is one of the slickest soaps I have ever used. I mean, penguins sliding on ice coated in teflon are like snails in comparison. So, a great shave with my skin left with a little bit of a dry feeling afterwards, but not as bad as the English soaps. Word of warning... this stuff is seriously slick! I have never had trouble with lather on the shower floor until now. All this said... would I order again? I'm unsure. The soap is a decent price, but I think I'd need something special with the scent options and a different, smoother presentation in the tub in order to buy again. There are other soaps almost as slick that can be had for less and with a nicer presentation. PS: I forgot to add... the constant "join up" pup ups on the website (every time you opened a new tab) was obnoxious. Also, navigation was difficult (at least in opera browser) as their coding doesn't show the right-side scroll bar.
Sorry you didn't like it.... The fill of the tub looks like the same that LASSCO and Caties Bubbles luxury cream does, it's not perfect smooth. All bumpy and the like. To me that doesn't effect the loading at all, you could always use a spatula or your finger and smash it down flat. Every soap takes a bit to figure out the water ratio and to me this one holds a ton of water and that's one of the reasons it is so slick. I get wonderful lather from it consistently. Post is always good for me, not at all like basic stearic coconut oil vegan soaps. As far as scents, they are a very small company that has stumbled into a great shave soap recipe. They aren't like b&m or Caties Bubbles etc, where they are doing complex scents. It's just basic stuff that works well. Give them time and suggestions and they will improve. Just like other artisans have tweaked their offerings over the years. Btw their shampoo bars are amazing. And the bath soaps. I can't speak to the deodorant, as all coconut oil ones with baking soda don't work for me at all.
