Taking a chance on this one!

Been looking for a hydro magic and found the golden 500s and fell in love. Prices are sky high though so took a chance on this one. I've cleaned up many razors, and this looks like surface dirt to me. Hoping it's a gem underneath. What does everyone else think after looking at the pictures. Also, it comes with a pack of Schick injector blades. Any chance there still usable?

The blades should be still usable. The razor looks very gunkified, but should clean up nicely given enough time and elbow grease. Good luck and let us see the finished results.

I just don't understand why people don't even try. It's like people that don't even clean their car when they try and sell it. Makes no sense. Works for me though....... hopefully :)

I agree, looks like mostly 50 or 60 year old fossilized lather that should come off with a little soap and warm water.

Probably, most don't care and many don't know how and are afraid to ruin anything. Then a third group might be thinking it's "patina" and don't want to ruin any value by removing it.

By the pics, looks like it should actually clean up quite nicely.

I think that razor will clean up just fine. I just got an Eversharp Hydro-Magic that was pretty mucked up, but it is just pretty now and it shaves great.

Just FYI but I noticed Walgreens website sells Schick injector blades. I'm sure you know where to get them, I just thought you might find the info useful.

Should clean up fine and I hear those Plus Platinum blades are the best you can find. Hopefully there are some in that injector. Haven't tried any myself but when I find some, I'm going to try them out. Check out drugstore.com or Amazon for the current production Schick blades. They're not bad at all.

Thanks for the heads up on drugstore.com, just ordered a couple packs of the injector blades, they have a nice sale going right now also. I have ordered from Amazon b4 but the order for the Schick injector blades took three weeks for delivery. Felt so good about this I added a bottle of Lilac Vegital.

So here's how it showed up:

And after a cleaning and polishing:

Not perfect under all that scum but darn nice! I'm not sure if it is how it came to me or after my polishing but it looks like some of the lacquer is a little worn thin on the head. Besides that great! Can't wait to shave with it. Anyone else have one of these that the metal seems a tiny bit loose from the plastic handle? That normal or an issue? It won't affect the shave but I'm curious.

Yup, and a little metal polish but might have been too much.

    Yeah a splendid job there!

Those active foam cleaners work pretty well, and combined with a mild polisher, almost any razor can be buffed to shiny.

It seems really common for a little gold finish to be worn off the heads on these. They're brass underneath so they'll hold up fine though. It also seems common for the head to handle attachment to be a little loose. As long as it's not flopping around, it should still be fine to use.
