Would silicone glue be suitable for a temporary knot set to see if I like the loft? If so, how much to apply and how hard is it to remove the knot from the handle?
Do you mean caulk or glue? If it is caulk, then a small dab on the bottom should be enough. It should be fairly easy to remove the knot if you don't over do it on the caulk. Some people use Seabond denture pads to generate a temporary knot set as well.
Yes, because glue is a stronger compound. That is also why I recommended the Seabond pads because they are water resistant, can be cut to fit. and are designed to be removed.
I've restored around 30 brushes and all I use is silicone adhesive. Just put a little dab on the bottom of the knot and it will be strong enough to test, and it's easy to remove the knot and make adjustments in the loft by just pulling it out. I don't use a whole lot of adhesive for the permanent setting, and they are all very secure.
If the knot fits tight to the handle and if the handle has a "top" 2-3 drops of super glue can keep the knot to make your tests If there is no "top" (this happens with many cheap brushes) you can put carefully in the sides. Super glue won't last long in boiled water temperatures When it's time, soak and with a little side-pressure the knot will separate.
Not only are the pads ooze and zinc free, water resistent, custom fitable and easy to remove, BUT your knot and handle will also be "minty fresh".....
Always making with the tips, you are. I'm glad there are people with lots of experience who are willing to share, so I don't have to earn this knowledge the hard way.
