During the 1930s things seems bleak for Gillette. The company was forced into a merger with Autostrop due to Gillette's patent infringement on the Probak blade system. Due to malfeasance by Gillette management, in which units sold were vastly over stated in the 1920s, the management of Autostrop took complete control of the company, and eliminated from the company the last hold outs of King Gillette's management team. The Kroman steel blade was a complete disaster and had to be pulled from the market. The United States was in the middle of the great depression, which along with competition for blade manufacturing, saw Gillette sales take a nose dive. On top of all of that, King Gillette passed away in 1932. It would seem that the Gillette Corporation was doomed to fade away in the world of frugality and competition ... until this game changer was introduced to the U.S. market. The 1934 Aristocrat was created and produced in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. This was the very first model of Twist-to-Open (TTO) razor. Gillette began to turn the corner with this revolutionary design that would be the most dominate razor for the next 40 years.

I recently procured one of these razors for my collection and it is an absolutely wonderful shaver.

Saweet, my first time seeing a holder!
Nice story. That was a part of the shave history I had never heard before. I had always thought gillette dominated once they came into existence . Thank you for sharing! I love learning about history.

Been looking for a good used watch and this was right price. Probably early '70s but runs like a top. Need to buff the crystal.

Well here is another acquisition this week. Here is a 1919 Gillette U.S. Army Khaki Set with a Wade and Butcher blade in the razor and one in the dispenser. The one in the dispenser is shown in the photo.

They were being made, but the supplier is totally out of stock.

There is still one type that is different that is still in stock, but who knows for how long.

Nice handle. Did you get the head that came with it? If so is the review of the head on Amazon accurate?

After looking at some of their other offerings that utilize the same head, I will say that regardless of how glowing or damning the review was, the heads shown on some of the other razors (with the same unusual style head) were made of pewter. That indicates a conscious decision to make a product that is designed to last at bare minimum, a year (if that). The solid brass handle for $22 is a great deal, especially if you have an old type with a handle that is splitting and falling apart.:)

Nice catch Gary, I really like the look of that handle.
