Neat to see the difference in styles.

I’m familiar with some like these:

    And these

And some cool marketing for Amex...

So now I get to spend the next few years looking for frames :).

So I just got a mail call.... let's be honest curiosity and free shipping is what got me order this. I bought the Gold Dollar W59.... 1 thing I can say certainly looks like a thicker blade in the photos. 2nd it came shave ready, if your a butcher. I mean it cuts hair but It has to be the worst edge I've ever seen. It's only 40 CAD so can you really complain? For me and seeing the types of high quality stuff I buy and sell... this thing is the biggest piece of trash I've ever held in my hands lol. I didn't think people could actually be happy with such as this. This razor will be deemed my honing guinea pig. Look how tiny it is![IMG][IMG]

    Just a thought.
When I went about learning to hone, I used top quality razors, and taped the spine, they all survived quite nicely and my learning was not sidetracked by other issues. I used a New Dovo, a new TI, and a couple of NOS brand name razors.

I am happy that he is happy with his razor! I have no clue how much expierence with straights he has. Although in my expierence quality wise I would rather a 30 or 40$ Crown and sword or h. Boker... heck you can even get 5/8 wade and butchers for the amount I spent on this. Oh well curiosity killed the cat. It's not a major investment, I bought the GD because Anthony Esposito raves about them and got my curiosity going. I haven't tried to use it yet or hone with it yet as I am currently Lacquering my JNAT and needs time to heal so when it does and I get to test shave I will let you know or possibly sell it.

As with all Gold Dollars, they are not consistent with their edges.
BTW, I have a few years experience in "Straights". I have honed, successfully, well over 100(I don't count), and shave with them daily. There have been only a few razors I couldn't hone, because of the wear, or quality of the steel. I do own some Bokers, Crown and Swords, W&B, as well as many other hyped razors. These are made very well. But, I try not to get caught up in the named brand hype. Some of my best shaving razors are not the typical named brands. I have also found the Chinese "ZY" Razor is great shaver, honed correctly(Today's Shave).
My adventure with the W59 wasnt to prove it was better than Vintage, just an option. Besides, the steel is very good, if you ever get around to honing it, or send it off to have a professional to have it honed, you will see the razor shaves quite well. Although the spike tip is ridiculously dangerous.

This came in the mail today. Vintage Johan Engström frame back, and it came decently sharp - a big surprise. I'm using it for tomorrow morning's shave.
