You won't get many arguments here The nice thing, if you decide straights aren't for you; you can sell off the equipment without loosing any $$. Of course, very few entirely leave the dark side. Make sure we get pics of your new gear! We're all about razor porn
Welcome to the dark side!Good choice on where to buy from, Larry does a good job on honing and sending out a good razor for a beginner. And also does a good job on honing. With starting to learn stropping I suggest to lay it on a flat surface to keep from nicking it as easily, till you learn the motions. Good luck on the journey and ask questions.and post pics
Yeah, most seem to recommend going with WD and have good things to say about it. It seems like the ideal way to get started with a quality razor without investing a ton of money. I looked into the set that WCS sells, which is $170 and that Razor Emporium sells, which is $60. I actually almost went with the RE set but it includes a Gold Dollar razor and I didnt exactly see great reviews for the GD. The fact that its made in China was a turnoff for me. I worry that its inferior quality steel, wont hold an edge and I'll be getting it honed every month or 2. Id prefer to stick with something from Solingen or Sheffield. It will be interesting to see what razor WD sends me. Im hopeful that it will be a Dovo or some other German made razor but whatever is fine. If I like it, Im going to upgrade to a Boker or Ralf Aust in the near future anyways.
Gold Dollars are Made of the Finest Carbon Steel..They have a Very Versatile Edge..The Latest Gold Dollars I have Honed are Ground as Good as a Dovo..In Fact..I Reckon Some of these Current SR Companies are Gonna Run into Trouble if Gold Dollar Maintain their Current Level of Quality Control..They Surprised Me..Cause these Recent Models were Actually a Pleasure to Hone Compared to Some of their Earlier Models.. I Much Prefer Vintage Myself Mind.. Billy..
I agree with @Billyfergie . The Gold Dollars are made with excellent steel. I have the old models, which can be a chore to hone, the.first time. But, the new models come almost shave ready, and mine only needed a good stropping. I might add that the ZY Razors, from China, have excellent steel too, and are Inexpensive. The Chinese steel has really surprised me.
