I'm already in with a picture but wanted to pass on this joke I saw today:

After a talking sheepdog gets all the sheep in the pen, he reports back to the farmer: “All 40 accounted for.”

“But I only have 36 sheep,” says the farmer.

Actually... I think you're right. I found it on a Google image search for "herd". I believe the original page was something about not following the herd when it came to investments.

Does that disqualify me?

Seems odd that a sheep herder would tend a flock of sheep. Why aren't they call "sheep flockers"?

Flocking is a verb of archaic UK isles usage. Animals that live in groups all display some types of "herd" behavior, a very general term. Different species have been given specific collective pronouns for the word "herd". I venture we use the word flock in modern English for sheep due to the heavy influence of the Scottish KJV of the New Testament, and it's near constant analogy of Jesus as a shepherd. In archaic usage, flocking meant to drive a herd of domestic animals in a directed movement toward food or pasture or water, etc.

Some of my favorite herd nouns

Quail - Covey
Lions - Pride
Owls - Parliament

Humans do it to. We call it families or clans or tribes or houses.
