Some of you may know of the Joris/Plisson soaps sold in the Thuja wood shave bowls. These retail for over a hundred dollars (with a soap puck). I found them for $30 each, but the shipping is FedEx, and costs $8.03 + a $3 handling charge. https://www.fossilsplus.com/store/products.php?product=Med%2dlg-Round-Wooden-Box-(TWMLR137) Is $41.03 worth it? You decide. If enough people are interested, I'd consider doing a group buy to reduce shipping and handling costs for everyone (CONUS only). Edit: I decided I wanted to see the one I would be getting and found this one elsewhere for a slightly higher price. I'm still willing to do a group buy, but I won't be ordering a bowl from them myself.
Not something I'd use, but thank you @PLANofMAN for taking the time to research h and post this info.
It is a beautiful bowl! Pricey, but nicely executed. These wooden bowls, however, tend to fit my bowl-budget better…I've four of them. via Amazon
I guess I should post my bowl here. I'm more than content with this purchase. I thought those bowls were covered with a veneer, that often cracks and comes loose?
I think those are the same bowls that QCS uses. If so, I've never bought one, but a buddy of mine has been using his for years and it still looks pretty near perfect. In general, I am concerned about using any wooden bowl with soap and water over a long period of time. The concern might be completely unfounded, but I prefer pottery when it comes to soaps.
I also prefer ceramic soap bowls, unfortunately, there's not many options out there for purchasing soaps with pottery bowls and they generally tend to be outrageously expensive or subpar. Wood bowls, like a lot of our shaving stuff, do require maintenance. In between soap pucks, an application of Carnuba or melted parrafin wax will protect the interior of the bowl, and monthly applications of products like Howard's Feed-N-Wax (beeswax and orange oil) to the exterior will keep a bowl looking better than new. In thuya wood's case, the burl is already naturally rich in oils, making it highly suitable for wet environments.
What a lovely bowl, I wouldn't mind replacing all my Ikea tins with one of these. But they would take up too much space, and I am not too keen on building another wing on my house But it was a really lovely bowl
