Hi, After many years I have returned to the fold with DE razors! I have shaved with mug soap and brush all my life, but in the 70's jumped on the "Trac II" bandwagon. Because of different reasons and cost have gone back to DE razors and started out by buying a Merkur 38C "Barber Pole" model and 120 Crystal blades. I'm very happy with this but noticed people were into vintage razors so thought I would try that. I found what I believe is a Gillette "Tech" razor with a big handle??? I don't know this is my guess looking at pics on the Internet? I was going to enclose a pic of the Tech but can't save it from sellers site? It is gold and has a worn case with blue cloth inside with gold lettering. I hope it is WWII vintage when I get it and can confirm what it is! It appears to be in excellent condition with all of its plating. I hope it cleans up nice when I get it! I paid $31 for it (to much?) Thanks!
Hi, Thanks Dave, does it look like it's worth $31??? I'm thinking it should clean up and not need a replate from the look of it? Is this WWII vintage????
you'll have to play detective once the razor is on hand. date code, or lack of, and style, sometimes the box, will give you clues to track down its age.
There's a bunch of them on the bay and I think you can do much better than $31. It is a good shaving razor. Look at the buy it now razors. You can get one you like.
Hi, Thanks Jay! I already bought this one but hope it cleans up well! If so I will be happy with what I paid! I see prices all over the place on these old razors!!!
Hi, Well I just looked on e bay. I didn't do to bad. The ones I saw in "buy it now" where expensive as mine or missing a lot of plating! From what I can see in the pic mine seems to have all it's plating still. Maybe not a bargain but don't think I got hurt! This is fun learning about these vintage razors and still cheaper. Than talking to women and drinking scotch!!!
When I started my collection I set limits on what I was willing to pay for any razor. If you are patient and set your limits, you don't have to over pay. For certain razors (birth year), I raised that limit. These old razors generally clean up really well. I don't have a razor that I don't shave with. Can you post a link to the page of the razor you bought?

Hi, Thanks Jay, for the welcome! You are right, shaving is fun again. So happy I threw that Trac II away!!!
Hi, Well....this is getting addicting! I just bought a fixer upper. If it is in decent shape I might get it replated. This should be from around 1920! For $12 shipped I'll chance it!
You would be surprised at just how well some of those nasty looking razors clean up! That one may well sparkle with a little scrubbing bubbles, or flitz. That's part of the fun. So far, I don't have any award winners, but they all shave well, and clean up quite well.
Hi, Thanks, I'm seeing that as a 1917/20 "Pocket Edition" Razor????? Your maybe right, a good clean up might set it straight! I'll have to see!
that's normally called Gillette old type ball end then depending on the packaging could be of several sets look for the serial number to narrow down the year. Note: Any Old Type without a serial # were made from 1921 to 1929.
Hi, Thanks Dave! Are these older "Old Types" going to be more aggressive than my Merkur 38, or about the same????
maybe a touch more, so much of this stuff is sooo subjective. add pairing with different blades, is like saying x100 I get nice close shaves with those old open combs.
