A short while ago, I got some brushes pretty cheap. Two of them really needed restoring as the knots were total garbage, with one needing a good paint job, as you can see from the first picture. The red one just needed a good cleaning and polish. I also opened them up some to accept larger knots. The red plastic handle had an 18mm knot, now it has a 24mm Frank Shaving Synthetic. The wood one, now painted Navy Blue and Coast Guard Orange, didn't realize I gave it nautical colors til later, now has an 18mm Boar knot, which I pre-conditioned with hair conditioner, up from the original 16mm knot. I also have one question which I need some help on. Does anyone know who made the brush with the red handle? Picture of the bottom of the handle on the last picture, M inside a circle.
I think the M in a circle just means it is made in the USA. There are a couple brushes at the link below with M, but are different brands. http://oldschoolshavingbrushes.com/other_manufacturers.html
If I had to guess I would say it's a "Stag" brand brush made for the Rexall Drug Company with a good part of the bottom worn off. Something similar to this:
Great job on the restore by the way. I love seeing these come back to life. Looking at your brush I would add that it's likely one of those Rexall brushes. Could be Klenzo, Stag or Rex.
Just an update to my unknown red brush handle. Seems like this style was used by different companies, including Made Rite and Rex. Model numbers were used for different types of knots. Made Rite 100... Made Rite 100N Rex 200 Made Rite 79
